Opinion Why overpopulation is bad for sales (mathematics thread)

Overpopulation is bad for sales. People aren't fond of my gut instinct threads so I'm going to prove it with mathematics.

Lets say we live in a society. And the world has only 1 million people. Lets say only 0.05% of the population makes games. And on average they make 1 game a year.

That means there is exactly 500 games in the entire world. The human brain can eventually browse through 500 games in a year. Players can pick the game exactly that fits to them, and there is no issue of great games being buried under a sea of mediocre titles. Players will naturally find great games easily.

Now imagine the population is 100 million. That means 50,000 games a year. 1 consumer will not have enough time to browse every game that's made. Great games may fall through the void. The only games they will play are games that are advertised to them in their face. The game industry will become corrupt and rigged, where rich just get more rich and poor get poorer.

10 billion people same deal, but even worse.

Ofc, in theory, more game devs means more kinds of unique games and more population means more kinds of unique audiences, but yes--advertising is still the world's best business to be in.

The statistics here are a bit loosey-goosey, as you are assuming that 500 games in total are enough to cover the desires of all the players, when realistically, a sample that small would have very few really good games. Equally, the rate of progression is going to be far far slower because you have less people driving research and equally less high-quality talent generated through extended competition, learning, and trial and error.

I much prefered Steam when it had only 500 games instead of the 6000 a year of 2018.

Stats aside. The current market does make fairly difficult/expensive to get your game seen over the number of games coming out these days.

This is not only games, but literally almost every type of art...
I would totally change the perspective and say that easy access to all kinds of "hi-end" technologies, professional equipment and almost unlimitied source of information (the internet) caused an overgrowth in "amateur" area. It's the same in music, graphics, movie, games, literature etc... today everybody can do what he want with 1/1000 of effort as 20-30 years ago. Add the "global instant acces" of the 1/3 of world's population and you have the effect of so called informational noise. The thresholds go higher every year. If you want to succeed you can't be just very good, you need to be outstanding, extraordinary, perfect and fabulous. Peaople get use to "good things" very quickly, even massive advertising can't help if you are simply "plain and common".

Yeah... sorry... this is our futuristic capitalistic reality... you can do what you want, you can have what you want... you can be who ever you want be... but don't count you'll be "special" or "rewarded".

So... no... not the overpopulation is the problem, it's the free market, globalism, and capitalism which are the problem...
40 years ago in east Europe beyond the Iron Curtain if you could played an electric guitar (if you managed to have or build yourself one) you were god, your band was known all over the city and region and it totally didn't matter that you and your music sucks and lacks talent!!!

I will always believe in an univers where men and women stand side by side in harmony and knowledge, both aware of their potential, and both living without insulting their intelligence, in consideration of the beginning and the end, never fooled by their creativity, never neglecting their similar, and above logic, influences, and material, when existence requires wisdom, and in which hands are open to support and guidance, for they have always been the same no matter the place from where they are. This picture is like an outcome; you can choose jokers and go down the hole, or believe in potential and get out of the hole. I think it has always been like this. It's funny how a character can play with our mind; to know that a superman era would have made you want to help, and that a joker era would have made you want to jokes, it's supposed to be sufficiant to prevent you from following any "obey messages"...

And if overpopulation is bad for sales, imagine that you're only five or ten persons who have all decided to become a dev at same time, each working on their own project with the wish to make it the longest greatest blockbuster in the group; the time required to master programming, graphic, sound, to reach a rank of masterpiece, is such long, and the creation of the project, and then the time to finish playing the game, that in the end you wouldn't even want to make profit and play everyone else's game, you would just want to go run outside and have a life; the game industry would be condemned! ahah, you would even throw away that wallet and follow a new balance!

That's not a "hole" and those aren't "jokers". They are visionaries planning a trip to the moon in their rocket.

I just can't think about how planet earth 20 years from now on. Probably like ready player one world, or something like apartment world like in japan?
Terrible overpopulation, terrible earth contamination, and our oil supply isn't limitless.

I think we will die because of our greed rather than God's wrath.

and if for some reason God's decided to wipe half of the humanity, does it count as mercy?

It was an answer to that clown pic; from a movie made to create interest and fun towards a character who is ready to terminate any existence for any and no reason, including yours and mine, by using the spotlight of another legitimate character who understands that you are more than garbages; a movie aimed to a new generation again locked in the false vision that they must be strong, above others, competitive, fearless, when existence could just be hand in hand in the consideration that the other is submitted to the same pressures in life and then deserves a right of existence above artificial mathematical logic, to prevent unecessary mistakes and mental diseases, which in the end would sculpt stronger values of all types and less conflicts. A clown that makes you live in a circus makes you want to wear makeup to better fit in the show in the middle of other clowns; in the end, the show isn't much entertaining and you're happy that technology will offer AI to find a "trustworthy friend" who won't play any trick, specialy in the last stage of existence; but in a real society, such AI doesn't have much meanings, for the one at your side prefers to have consideration than being a fool at neglecting yourself. Since that joker has become some sort of poor social engineering in a chain of "reverse values" and that it has had influences, and that a pic was encouraging an negative view of society through his profile, I took this other pic to counterbalance and give a positive view of society; for there is one when well maintained; and played with the scene in the pic to ponderate a world of clowns compared to a legitimate one; one would send you down, the other would help you be free. In short, I understand the pic.

With sentences like that, you must be a Faulkner fan. ;)
Dunno that guy ... *searches the net* ... don't know how to take it, if I like and if it fits. The intention was to make some make-up less fashionable... but who wants to wear a body armor with molded nipples anyway...

I'm sure Lady Gaga would be down for that.
