I have tried all sorts of games programming and given up as too difficult but started with GM today and at the grand old age of 59 I have produced my first game! Nothing special and no GML that I added but a proper working game!!

I am so encouraged I want to learn it so well to be able to start producing some commercial games.

So, anyone out there also be encouraged - what ever your age and what ever your background it is possible!

... It had lots of spammers offering cheap Viagra. You could... you know... get two birds with one stone. (sorry)
...Ew.

Awesome to hear! Game Maker is great for beginners to hop into and just wing it. The details behind design normally can come later.

you are the same as me. i used to program in basic and Z80 (spectrum), 6510 (C64), 680x0 (amiga) machine code back in the 80's/90's and although i managed to program most of the games / software i wanted i never really had the patience to complete them and always jumped around on to different things.

i always wanted to get back into programming but never really got round to it until now at 51 i finally kicked my arse into gear a gave GMS a go. and although it's not programming like i did way back when i had to write all of my own routines to do things and GMS does a lot of this for you but the logic of programming and problem solving side is definitely there which is the bit i always enjoyed most anyway. working out how to achieve something and having a tool that allows me to do it is just what i needed too rebuild my old projects and actually complete them. being older and more patient probably helps as well :D

i too want to learn it in more depth and release something commercial.

Good luck and hope you enjoy it as much as i do.

@Awkman nice to see another oldie on here, although i only feel young in my mind and suspect you do to, your going to love GMS and GML when you get used to it.

@chance tut tut, you know old age doesn't mean mr droopy, im not going into details but i bet i could shame you all ;)
XD
I will have you know Young Man - all my faculties are in perfect working order LOL
That lol seemed forced. LOL

With the original post though: pursue what you intend, it's great to see the "older generations," getting in on this amazing revolution. Your probably 20 to maybe at max 30 at the time that arcades were really a thing, so I could imagine you have wanted to make games for quite some time now. Enjoy yourself!

GM is a great place to start.

Awesome, man! I've been able to come up with some basic prototypes and then I end up psyching myself out. Still managed to complete Shaun Spalding's first game tutorial and have a working Asteroids clone with a few minor differences. Next I'm going to try to wrap my head around some side scroller variants. :) hoping I can find a good bridge to work with arrays and ds lists and all that stuff....

Welcome to the GMC... and perhaps you'd like to join the upcoming GMC Jam as well. Even if you're new to GM, nothing stops you from having fun there.

@Alice: Am I doing it right? ^^"

Liar.

Before this topic becomes another one of those that derail into discussion about @chance's faculties... congratulations, @Awkman! You have now entered the eternal hell of everlasting learning to learn to improve. Make sure to always keep the manuaaaaaal~♫ ready to be used in case you decide to delve deeper into GM:S. If you aren't already doing so, you should also start working on the official tutorials (start GM:S -> Tutorials), as they are the starting point for every new GM:S user.
