We're happy to launch today the new GameMaker Community forums!

As many of you know this has been a very long time coming. Our initial plan was to release the new forums in tandem with a necessary server upgrade several months ago, but a number of unforeseen security issues ended up delaying the final release *well* beyond our expectations. We want to apologize for the unreasonable amount of time that the community has been without usable forums. Our community is an invaluable asset and the forums are an essential resource for both beginner and veteran users. Not having this resource available for an extended period was damaging for us and many of our users and this was never our intention.

As part of an apology for this disruption, which we know has affected the workflow of many, we're offering a coupon code for an additional 10% off any of our products on offer. This discount will work in conjunction with other discounts from our currently ongoing sale. Simply enter "GMC10" at checkout. This offer will be valid for one week starting today and will expire at midnight (GMT) on the 27th of June.

Thankfully the forums are now open to everyone. We hope that you will be happy with our new look and the new forum software. Before posting, please take a moment to read the updated Community Guidelines and check out the sticky threads on boards for any specific extra rules.

You'll find that we've trimmed things down a bit compared to the old forum, and in place of multiple sub-forums for different things we've implemented thread Prefixes and Tags. We ask that you use both of these when making your topics as it will help with searching and visibility. Should you have any questions about the new forum software, or should you find any issues that you think should be discussed, please post to let us know in the New Forum Issues topic.

If you are coming here from the old GMC and find that another member has taken your previous username then you may contact Nocturne - our resident tyrant forum overlord - and request that your prior name be returned to you and he will do so at his discretion for long term prior community members only. Note that this offer is only available for the first month or so of the new forum being open.

On behalf of YoYoGames and all the forum staff, thank you for joining and we hope that between us all we can continue to make the GMC the best community forum around!

Whee. Kinda wish I'd actually feel hyped over this, but whatever hype was left from the time of the upgrade's start has fizzled out, and I got word of the new forums going online 15 minutes ago and didn't have time to build up any new hype. Welp.

Well, that new layout will take a bit to get used to. Hopefully it'll take much shorter than until the next upgrade.

They seem to have properly styled quote boxes now, too...
Quote chains are gonna be a pain aren't they?

EDIT: oh it removes the other quotes, nice...? idk how I feel about this.

Huh, that's kinda odd. But maybe it's for the better? I've never been particularly fond of those quotation pyramids. o_O

*walks in slowly with a long white beard and empty eyes* I've waited for this my whole life.

EDIT: I'm not going to lie, I heavily prefer the old like and dislike system more. Taking away everyone's ability to express discontent with a post is a mistake.

I do actually agree, but that's just the way this new software works... we could get an add-on for up/down voting, but that is another potential security risk and not something we really want to/can do. Sorry.

Each to their own, I've made my stance on this clear before. I feel disapproval is better shown with context and reason (a post) and not automation. Approval on the other hand is a pleasant sentiment either way.

but everyone has their own tastes.

Having only likes and no dislikes creates a very skewed representation of how people think about a post. Look around and you'll see that many people that used the old forum were too bashful to leave a reply when they disliked something or even liked something but had no problem simply clicking a button that said how they felt. If you only have a like button, it will seem like things have less opposition and that can be dangerous as it leads to higher rewards for people who post controversial content. If 100 people agree with something (and like it) and 90 people dislike something, not all 90 people with leave a reply to defend their opinion. Yes, they could like a following post that goes against the controversial but then you have an "Us versus Them" system going where the forum gets divided in half.

EDIT: Having a few minutes to think about it, there denfinitely are great reasons to keep the system the same too. I'm sure I'll get used to it in no time, and I'm just happy to see the forum up. Thank you guys for bringing it back! :)

On the other hand though, people can reply to posts sharing why they do not approve of the post. Not putting a dislike button forces people to express themselves beyond a mouse click.

As I recall, one of the reasons for the software change was so that features and suggestions such as these could be much more easily added, because the software would be more modern, flexible and scalable. And now this? That gives off a worrying impression.

No, the forum change was so we could get rid of the behemoth that was the old GMC and dedicate a new and better secured set of machines to it.... and at the same time we ditched IPB because we didn't like it.

Account creation is bugged, it says "Your password must contain at least 1 special characters." when it does contain a "_". I created an account with a temporary password but I would really like to get it changed as I might not be able to remember this because it doesn't fit my system.

I've actually seen this type of forum before but it's still kind of different than what I'm used to. It's pretty hype to be honest. All these new features to toy around with! Haha.

Good lord. Thanks for this Yoyo.
Does the users have tags given by mods? Maybe we get a tag for old timer users. "Old Rag" or something.

In all seriousness is there also some needs for moderation? I plan on being here way too much.

I disagree.

I don't think what you're saying has no merit at all, but I've thought about this one a lot (too much, truth be told.) and decided this is the best direction to take. I don't really want to take this thread in a direction of discussing this in great detail. I will freely discuss this perhaps in another thread or via PM but you're very unlikely to change my mind on the matter.

Good idea merging Forum Games and Off-Topic, FG was basically dead, it didn't need it's own section.
