Legacy GM Way to make beat 'em up game?

I wanna make game like Battletoads, Castle Crashers but I don't really know how to make this like fighting, beat 'em all or brawler game, doesn't matter.

Here's a good tutorial: Building a Beat 'Em Up in Game Maker, Part 1: Player Movement, Attacks, and Basic Enemies.

Somewhere I think either he or someone else has the source code somewhere for a base project, but I couldn't find it quickly, so I'll leave it up to you. There's a few YouTube tutorials on it as well.
