Would it not make more practical sense to have the phone charger socket at the top of the phone?

i put my phone on a stand sometimes when watching a movie or app testing, but as the wire goes in the bottom it means you can not put the phone on the stand

Few of reasons why you might make that design decision.

Aesthetically, bottom of phone is where you hand is holding it/covering much of it. Hide the ugly stuff like charging holes there.

Practically, it's because the top of the phone holds a lot more electronics (cameras, front&back, speaker etc), so a charger up there would be a waste of space.

Biomimetically, it's because humans are use to holes that we insert stuff into being at the bottom.

It's actually a little more complicated than that...

The charge and audio is because it's usually a source of unshielded power and it can cause interference and corruption of circuits in the logic boards. phone circuits are very dense and small, and its not hard for a power fielding and its magnetic field to cause jumps or interference before it's had a chance to be filters into something the phone can actually use.

That's why no matter the age or manufacture, if you open a phone, they ussually all have the same layout. Sensors and logic at the top, attenas and storage to the side, battery and power MOSfets at the bottom.
