I wrote a python script to help guess the words. The dictionary I'm using doesn't have contractions in it... nor does it account for the likeliness of the word appearing.
BUT... here's a list of 61 words that could fit in the 9-character-long middle word.

and if anyone would like to skim through the 5-character-long second word, here are the 3088 possibilities:
['aargh', 'aback', 'abbey', 'abbot', 'abide', 'abode', 'abort', 'about', 'above', 'abuse', 'ached', 'aches', 'acids', 'acing', 'acorn', 'acres', 'acted', 'actin', 'actor', 'acute', 'adage', 'adapt', "It knows something you don't" could possibly mean hidden mechanics learned through context clues, or a boss enemy that hunts you like Alien. Lots of possibility there

It does something you cant

Final guess.
'does' is the wrong number of letters for that gap.

I think it must be this, or at least something very similar. To be honest I'd be a little bit stumped how to really make that theme a central part of the game. Perhaps some kind of card game with a bluffing element, where the opponent tries to mislead you? I shall sleep on it.

IT KNOWS SOMETHING YOU DON'T

that's my guess...
But isn't that a mechanic or story related feature that always happens in every game? Let alone in a story?

I mean, playing a game the first time means the AI (the It) would know things you don't know at first glance or without effort. I feel like that theme just would be another day at the park. Idk, it's just me. Not being rude or wanting to be rude.

Nah, past jams have been guessed correctly, it's just if the reveal is done well it's impossible to know for certain. I have a hunch they've picked these letters fairly carefully to promote guessing. After all, the guessing wouldn't be fun if we could figure it out with 100% certainty four days before the jam starts.

@HayManMarc Not to insult the people who came up with the theme, but the joke I always make is the smaller the jam, the more vague and pretentious the theme. I mean, could you imagine it being ROBOTS? Nay, my friend, it must be LURKING TECHNO DANGERS

I think "It knows something you don't" is a great theme. Sure, in all games the computer knows something you don't when you boot it the first time, but that doesn't mean you've made a game fitting the theme. If the theme is blue, you haven't followed the theme just because you've got a blue pixel somewhere in the game. The game knowing something you don't should be essential to the story or the gameplay. It could be a big plot twist, it could be certain mechanics changing throughout the game, actions having unforeseen consequences or just a scenario where everything isn't quite what is seems.

Turns out my weekend is more cramped than I thought it would be though 🙃

My initial reaction: 140 passwords??
I've had this google account since 2011
I've saved almost every password
temporary, and permanent, only for the auto sign in feature, I have all the ones I use now a days written down,
half of those passwords are to sites that don't even exist or to accounts that have been deleted lol

Out of interest, when did we end the practice of having a handicap to go alongside the theme? I last entered Jam #2 many years ago, and I think handicaps were only introduced after that, but they've since disappeared again.

The first GMC Jam with a handicap was GMC Jam 6 (April 2012) and it was introduced because two entries came joint 1st the previous Jam, so we let 1 winner pick the theme and 1 pick the handicap.

Handicaps then stayed up to and including GMC Jam 21 (January 2016) - the very last jam on the old GMC before YYG switched over to this new forum. When the "new" jams started on this forum the handicap was scrapped. Incidentally this new jam was labelled GMC Jam 1 but we have since gone back to the old numbering system (so it would be GMC Jam 22 really).

I have my doubts. It seems like one of these themes that leads to interesting concepts when executed well, but they are hard to execute adequatly in the first place.

For me, there are two conditions a great theme needs to meet:
1. It can inspire creative people to come up with really interesting inspirations, both in terms of gameplays and overall setup.
2. It has a range of easy to execute and varied fallbacks for people who aren't as inspired by the theme. At the same time these fallbacks still aren't so generic you can pick a game and there's a good chance it'll meet the theme somehow (vide AGAINST ALL ODDS).

I think "It knows something you don't" meets condition 1, but there seems to be trouble with easily executed fallbacks (unless we stretch the theme to the point of genericity). And without easily executed fallbacks, it's harder for people to participate with a themed entry even when they don't feel much of an inspiration at the moment.

To be fair, almost any theme (including that one, if it is the theme) can be crowbarred into the game's story without much effort.

So I think point 2. would still stand for this theme. Mechanics-wise that theme may be quite limiting, but story-wise there are a lot of ways people could use it.

What is handicap? I'm new to this. Also, is the jam starting in few hours?
It was an extra challenge that you could choose to submit to in some of the earlier jams. So as well as the theme, there'd be a handicap such as 'your game has to be in black and white' or 'you cannot use the keyboard at all'. There's no handicap in this jam though.

Well, I feel inclined to agree. Other than writing a story, not seeing a great way to implement this as a gameplay theme. Well, they never said jams were supposed to be easy!

First thing that comes to mind for me is a "Impossible Quiz" style game where you get tasked with various puzzles / tasks and need to figure out exploits to get past them, because the obvious solutions all don't work.

Hi guy's, i don't understand the theme?
Basically either as part of the mechanics or the story, the game (or a main character in the game) should know something the player doesn't.

For example the whole point of the game could be to find the answer to a single riddle the bad guy gives you at the start or something (in its most basic interpretation).

Best of luck everyone! I think I might actually enter. Think I'm gonna do the opposite of last jam. Instead of chill gameplay and (kinda) puzzles I'm gonna go for extreme juice and fighting! Should be fun. :)
