THEME:

A BIG MISTAKE

The GMC Jam is a WILD game development contest run every 3 months by the GameMaker Community. This is the 41st such jam.

Members compete to make the best game possible over the course of just 96 hours.

GMC Jam 41 will take place on the following dates:

May 27th, 2021 12:00 UTC - May 31st, 2021 12:00 UTC
(Countdown Clock)

Enter in the Games Topic

  • Any GMC member can take part in the GMC Jam. You must use GameMaker to create your game.
  • Games must be made between 12:00 UTC on May 27th and 12:00 UTC on May 31st, and posted in the games topic.
  • You may use resources such as graphics, sounds and scripts that were made prior to the jam, as long as the bulk of your work takes place during Jam weekend.
  • The credits should make clear where the assets come from and which were made before the Jam; The creators of the entry must have rights to all of the assets; unlicensed use of resources is not allowed.
  • You may create one post per entry in the games topic. You may create this post before your game is finished and continue editing that post to update your progress, in fact you are encouraged to write a devlog!
  • All entries must have a download link in the Games Topic before it closes at 12:00 UTC on May 31st.
  • All entries should work on Windows as a standalone executable / compressed zip folder. No installers please. Your entry can also work in HTML5 and on other platforms, but most voters will be using Windows and therefore your entry should work primarily on windows in order to secure a decent amount of feedback.
  • All entries are encouraged to follow the Jam theme. It isn't mandatory to do so, but you'll often get more favourable reviews from your peers!
  • You may participate alone or in a team of up to 3 members. See the "teams" section below if you're looking for teammates.
That's all you need to know, but more information will be available in the Games Topic when it opens and in the rules discussion topic.

  • As soon as the Jam ends on May 31st at 12:00 UTC, a zip folder of the games will be created and posted in the voting topic so that players can download all the entries at once if they wish.
  • Voters will then have just over 2 weeks to play and rank the games and voting will close on June 14 at 9:00 UTC.
  • Any member of the GMC can vote, even if they didn't enter the jam. You cannot vote for your own entry. Votes shall be posted in the voting topic.
  • Voters are encouraged to rank as many games as possible, and their final votes must include at least their top 3 games. More information on this will be provided in the voting topic when it opens.
Boring technical info about how the votes are counted: Entries receive points based on their votes, following the formula <BASE SCORE> * <TOTAL VOTES> / (<TOTAL VOTES> - <VOTING AUTHORS>) .
For example, with 20 votes:
- the entry whose author didn't vote would have average score of <BASE SCORE> / 20
- the entry with 1 voting author would have average score of <BASE SCORE> / (20-1) = <BASE SCORE> / 19
- the entry with 3 voting authors would have average score of <BASE SCORE> / (20-3) = <BASE SCORE> / 17

More info in the Jams Suggestion topic
As this is @Alice 's formula and she's more mathematically inclined then a raccoon with a PhD in pizza, she shall handle voting for the most part. Alice you are the best!

That's all you need to know, but more information will be available in the Voting Topic when it opens!

Main Prizes
  • The winner(s) get to decide the Theme of the next GMC Jam.
  • The top 3 entrants, as well as winners of the "Best Of" categories will win personalized banners for their forum signature and a place in the Hall of Fame topic.
  • More to be confirmed...

Community Prizes

Members can offer their own prizes for the GMC Jam. PM me, @EvanSki , and I'll add your prize to the list. NOTES: You should offer something based on your skills, rather than a commercial prize. You will also need to handle giving out the prizes yourselves after the end of the jam.
  • @EvanSki - If @Ninety is in the top 3, I'll publicly release my cringe youtuber intro from 2015
  • @EvanSki - The first place winner/s will be on the first ever episode of The Stray Pixel Podcast
  • @kburkhart84 [Post] - I hereby offer up a license to Firehammer Input and my Firehammer Audio system(should be done by then). I will give out 8 licenses of each system. The top 3 in general and the top of each category get one of each.
  • @SilentxxBunny - I'll make a signature banner for last place.
  • @JordanOttesen - To 1st and 11th place: I'll write and record a loopable song for your game specifically based on your chosen theme (music like I have here).
  • @Neptune - 3 Steam keys for my game for 1st 2nd & 3rd place
  • ...no more prizes, why not submit one?

You may enter the GMC Jam as part of a team (up to 3 members). Sometimes collaborating as part of a team can help you to e-meet new and interesting people. Here we will list people looking for teammates. If you want to be added to the list, send me @EvanSki , a private message with the skills you are offering.
  • EXAMPLE: ( Member ) is a ( Skill ) looking for a ( Other Skill )...

streams.png
Live Streams! This is a list of people who have told me that they are planning on streaming their playthroughs of the jam games! I encourage those that want or are wanting to stream the games to do so and also let the community know! Streaming games allows the devs of the games to have play tests of their games and gain useful info about how they can further improve their game dev skills! PLEASE NOTE: Nothing is confirmed yet this is to just give a general idea, a more confirmed and up to date list will be in the voting topic.

The more people that enter the jam, the more fun we'll all have! Spread the word far and wide. Use the hashtag #GMCJam on Twitter (and other social media networks), join the Discord Chat, and talk about your games on the GameMaker Reddit. You are, of course, encouraged to talk about the Jam as much as possible here on the GameMaker Community. Create a devlog on the Work In Progress forum if you dare, and definitely post your thoughts, comments and memes in this very discussion topic!

You can also change your signature to tell other GMC members about the jam:

Haha. Now it is the crazy raccoon you must PM! Unfortunately won't be able to participate in this one. Taking some time away to work on expanding my knowledge in other engines. Best of luck to everyone! Should be a good'n!

This is how we know we picked the right person to be the jam host. Man, you didn't have to go all out on the artwork like you did! When you blur your eyes, it almost looks like a cat wearing a gagball! I think it's HOT!

Firehammer Games
The only thing I hate as Jam host is I miss out on guessing the theme
The winner who chose the theme also misses out on this part....such is life.

I should be able to participate in this one as well. I'm undecided how I'm going to make it, as I still have the itch to try to force myself to learn pixel art. But I'm still somewhat versed in higher resolution pre-rendered sprites and I'm still messing around with trying to get something that attempts to look like pixel art out of 3d renders as well, so I'm really torn which way to go.

Is it that time already? Alright, my goal this time will be quality over quantity! At least until the theme gets revealed and I get an idea that's too ambitious. 😄
You know I was thinking of actually making a quality game. Not big but maybe more serious. Move out of the class clown for one jam. Maybe…….

But maybe it will be crap. People will be like it was neither entertaining or good. Toque has lost it.

or go bizarre. Out there abstract insanity

Firehammer Games
Yeah kind of feels like the Jam just got over.
You know....I said the same thing when this topic popped up. I had to look at the date to see if that much time had already passed.

Be warned though people...my sound system will likely(hopefully) be done by then. My game may not have the best sounds, but it will have the "use" of the sounds I have :)

EDIT***********

@EvanSki I'm seeing that there aren't much for prizes just yet. I hereby offer up a license to Firehammer Input and my Firehammer Audio system(should be done by then). I will give out 8 licenses of each system. The top 3 in general get one each, and the top of each category also gets one of each. It will be up to the team how they distribute if the winners worked in a team. Of course, anybody who wins an extra can choose to share with whomever they wish. The only requirement to redeem said prizes will be to PM after it is all done with who gets what licenses, and the recipients will need an itch account to receive it. And yes, the licenses are permanent as long as the systems get updated(none of that time limited crap here :) ).

If that's the theme, I have straight up NO idea what game to make for it.
Bro, I'm already bursting with ideas. XD

A game where you play as a mainstream media outlet and you have to convince the masses to either wear or not wear masks, depending on arbitrary orders you receive from the mysterious "Not China."
A satirical beat-em-up where you slap the masks off of people's faces, causing them to immediately catch COVID and die. The stronger enemies are wearing more masks.
A stealth game where you dodge store employees who try to force you to wear a mask. (Oh man, I really wanna make this one).

I actually kind of hope that "Antimaskers" is the theme now. Lol.

Hey friends! Which of these prizes would be the most valuable to you? Deciding what I want to offer, and I'd like it to be something people would genuinely want to win. Maybe I'll run a little poll here.

  • "Like" 👍this post for Pixel Art Sprites
    • One character (the highest res I'll do is SNES style like my game here)

  • "Love" 😍 for Pixel Art Tilesheet
    • You choose the theme/terrain, I'll make it (refer to my game for an example)

  • "Haha" 😆 for Music
    • I'll write and record a loopable song for your game specifically based on your chosen theme (music like I have here)

  • "Wow" 😲 for Thumbnail Artwork
    • Fancy artwork for a thumbnail image like I did for this game I made for the Great Spring Jam

Last jam I offered play tests with an analysis of the results to the top 3 developers and while they were all super super friendly, they didn't take me up on it. So I figured I'd check in to see if there's something else I could offer that folks would like.

So which of those prize options listed would you like the most?

Edit: removed the gift card option, as wholesome as it is, its against the forum rules as prizes can not be in any monetary form or direct cash. -Evanski
Edit: my bad! I should have read the forum rules more closely. Thanks for catching that! -Jordan

  • "Thinking" 🤔 for a $10 Amazon Gift Card
    • Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings if this is the one you vote for

So, IMO, only the Music or Thumbnail Artwork would be good prizes(since monetary stuff is out). The reason is that in game graphics(characters or tilesheets) need to really match the rest of the game. I'm thinking it will be trouble trying to have you match a game, or have a game match you. At the least with music, there is more likely compatibility with the same style than with graphics that are quite "picky" about matching if you get what I mean. Thumbnail Artwork is different since it isn't "in-game" and so sometimes isn't even in the same style and that's OK.
