In my opinion it would look better if the explosions didn't stretch beyond the blue walls where the player and NPCs walk, but deflect off the walls and stay within

i would keep both designs, just use them as the next theme, so like when you have cleared so many levels you go to next theme with its set of levels to complete, and for your characters i would have something that is different about them, like slower speed for one, medium speed then last one with faster speed, or a weapon that's exclusive to that one.
