A gmk is the old save format for game maker, game maker studio 2 can't read or open them. Quite common when browsing the legacy forums. You can easily ask for some one here on the forums to updated for you, but wouldn't it be better if we had a stand alone gmk to game maker studio 1-2 converter instead of wasting people's time downloading gmk's, converting them, and re-uploading them?

    And no, I don't have a list a gmk's that need converting, this isn't a self pity - guilt trip post :)
just a suggestion for the game maker team.

There have been so many major changes between legacy 8.0 and GMS 2 that writing a converter would actually be counter-productive. It would imply compatibility that just isn't there and cause needless confusion. Opening those files in LateralGM and then manually porting the code over makes more sense.

You could try opening them in LateralGM, saving as .gmx and then attempting to import the project into GMS2. Expect things to break.

This would cause more problems than it solves. Suddenly we no longer only have people using 1.x code in 2.x, but also people using 4, 5, 6.1, 7, 8.1... code in 2.x and wondering why that stupid compiler error message won't go away. Actively promoting using old code and techniques which are most likely outdated or entirely invalid at this point is among the last things the developers of a tool that claims to be beginner-friendly would want.

Isnt that against the forum rules?

"Post topics that request or incite others to break the YoYo Games EULA or ToS, for example requesting someone port GameMaker: Studio games to other platforms that you do not own."

    Besides that fact
It would just be a glitchy mess because of ide changes

I reccomend just starting from scratch
It will save you time and
    Teach you GMS2

Asking to port a game from an older version to GMS2 is perfectly fine as long as you're the author of the source file or otherwise have permission to use or share it, but I'd assume it could be a rather bumpy ride due to technical changes under the hood.

What's specifically not allowed by the rule you quoted is, for example, asking someone to export a game to, say, HTML5 or Ubuntu for you. "Platform" in this context refers to GMS' export platforms, not to versions of the software as a platform. :)
