Slowdown in compiled game

I recently compiled a rather short "score attack" game that I have made, and I have noticed that sometimes the game moves very slowly: half speed or worse. This is not just a temporary thing that might happen when a lot of objects are on the screen; it is continuous throughout the game. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I compile the game as a Windows installer file or an .exe file, and the slowdown never happens when I test the game in GameMaker. Running in debug mode shows normal frame rates. Could this just be a problem in the hardware of my computer, or could there be something in the game's program itself that might cause the problem?

I found this happened with my old antivirus program which would monitor exe's that are running until they are considered safe, drastically slowing the application, could be the same for you?
