I am generating a terrain mesh from a heightmap. What I want to do is simplify the mesh so that areas that are all pretty much on the same plane, use fewer triangles. while at the same time retaining detail in areas where the height is changing rapidly. The simplification would be done once, not on the fly.
Help would be appreciated if anybody can point me toward a good algorithm.
