Hi there fellow developers/artists. I'm creating a game by myself called Seedlings.
It's a puzzle platformer set in the forest. You play as a seed that can control different plant creatures. Using the different types of controllable creatures you must work your way through the forest towards an unknown goal.

I'm still in early development but I have a short demo ready if you would like to test it out.
It's PC only right now but will have mac support too.

    Download the game on itch.io

    Here's some in-game screenshots.

    screen03.jpg

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Peter.

It's picked next to the thread title when posting the thread. Added that for you.

That should stop once you have 5 posts total (spam filter is over-protective because spam-bots have been getting creative)

I like the way this looks a lot. Very pleasant and relaxing looking. Also a bit nostalgic; reminds me a bit of CDI games, in a good way. Good stuff!

Thank you. The artwork isn't quite final because I usually end up spending way more time programming than doing artwork.

Awesome job, this looks great - reminds me a lot of the Samarost series and with Unravel with platforming mechanics.
Would you mind sharing any details of your process with regards to the photorealistic assets, how your process them and how you get them into the game etc?

Keeping an eye on this, great job! :)

Thanks. For the artwork, I first design the level with basic wall objects until I'm satisfied. Then i take a screenshot and take it into photoshop where I manipulate photos to match the walls. Once the art is in I hide the walls layer in gamemaker.

Here's a screen with the walls turned on.
    game-walls.jpg

For the artwork creation I will make a full video at some point, but to sum it up really quickly I just take photos in a forest gully near my house and chop it up in photoshop and match the colours. I put an image below to kind of explain it.

    art-process.jpg

    Cheers for the support.

Yeah it was more the Photoshop manipulation I was interested in, I know what the process is but it's harder than it looks to get such a clean and coherent final image made up from lots of constituent parts of different photo's.

You're obviously handy with Photoshop, the final image above looks really good - thanks for the info! :)

A few weeks ago I presented Seedlings at my first game expo. Got some good feedback and saw where a lot of people got stuck so I did an overhaul of the shooting mechanics. There's now an aimer and there isn't any air control.

There's a new version (PC) out with the new mechanics in place.

I just played the demo. I thought it was great. As mentioned by pretty much everyone, the aesthetic is awesome. I really like the idea of this game and I think there's a lot of room for creative puzzles. I am curious how the birds are going to play in to future levels. Will there be stealth sections? Chases? I'm interested to see where this goes. I don't really have any critique. The mechanics and central idea are already solid, and as long as you keep pushing new ideas throughout the game, I don't think it will get stale.

Are you planning on doing other environments aside from the forest? I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes. *watches thread*

Thanks for checking it out :)

At the moment i plan for it to be 60% forest and 40% in a science lab trying to escape. I may mix in some chase sequences along with the puzzles.

That's so really really awesome. The mood is indescribable.
Not only do I dig the idea, it's also so nicely executed!
I wish you the best luck and I hope this game makes some noise.

I played through the demo. The controls feel very good. The art is beautiful. It would be nice if the different log suits strengths were a bit more obvious. Logs that shoot further could have larger tops, or look more like a canon. I was not expecting there to be any real story, so I was very surprised how it ended. Very interesting. I look forward to seeing the lab, and perhaps learning were the seeds came from.

Thanks for giving it a go. Yeah the changing of how far logs shoot was a last minute change to make some puzzles possible but they were originally going to be very similar. I will have to change the design on one of them to differentiate them more.

I originally was going to make a tree creature that could push boxes, then i thought why not just make the box itself a creature.
