GameMaker Pokemon Mystery Dungeon style minimap

Hi GMC, I'm working on a randomly generated dungeon game and I want to emulate the minimap style of pokemon mystery dungeon where the map is overlayed on the play space.


I've looked around and haven't seen any threads about similar things. Any ideas on where to start implementing something like this?

Draw the map to a surface and draw the surface in the Draw End or Draw GUI event. Whenever a previously hidden area becomes visible, redraw the surface, or at least the draw the new part.
