Hiya all,

For the past little while myself and my gf have been developing Overcrowd: A Commute 'Em Up. She does the art, I do the code. We hope to hit Steam Early Access 2018/19 if all goes well. I hope you get a chance to check out our Steam Coming Soon page and wishlist us if it looks like your cup of tea! We're also at EGX Rezzed next week.

In a nutshell:
Overcrowd is a tactical management sim set on the London Underground. Blending base building with pausable real-time strategy, Overcrowd offers a unique mix of spatial puzzling, strategic thinking and split-second choices.

Launch trailer:

Our steam page has a lot more detail including a features list.

Your game looks really promising, and I definitely would check it out.

Also that gif you have up top jumps to different scenes too quickly and makes me sick to look at it. The trailer is awesome though

This looks fantastic, great job. I really like the isometric scenery its both bright and visually appealing while still being clear and legible.

You're really channeling a theme hospital vibe here which I love.

Thanks :) We worked through a lot of iterations to make the floor readable as it's across multiple levels so glad it seems to be working.

Ta @camerakid! Yes congratulations on getting to market, I only heard about your game end of last year - looks lovely. For Overcrowd, if you're are interested you can check out our long dev blog which dates nearly back to 2012 here! This has been a long term term passion project for me and my gf - we learned pretty much everything from scratch hence the long development time.

Don't forget you can wishlist Overcrowd: A Commute 'Em Up here:

Just thought I would post this Overcrowd trailer analysis by Schematics Team. Was pretty interesting (at least to me!), they had some nice ideas.

Are you happy with EA? I've read that it can hurt sales and might be better to avoid it.

Edit: oh it's not yet published there.

@YanBG I have heard that lately too, but I guess there are pros and cons to everything. I think story based genres are the ones that might suffer most from early access. Management/tycoon/builders - these seem to suit early access a lot better beacuse they have replayability, and because of that complexity can potentially benefit from fine tuning and perhaps a more incremental development process. That's my take, I look forward to getting there and finding out :p

Isometric pixel art, but the similarities end there! :D
(edit. in response to Habbo hotel comparisons, since removed?)

Hey all, just an update - I was very happy to see Overcrowd got a whole page preview in the December issue of PC Gamer :) Said some very nice stuff too! Here's a gif - you need to imagine the fresh magazine smell (or better still, pick up a copy!)

Hi,

Awesome work so far on the game. Are you using GMS1 or GMS2? And are you able to tell me how you are handling the depth sorting with the isometric tiles please?

Thanks for saying - I started some years back in GM1 but ported over to GM2 recently so I could look at more platforms in the future. Happy to talk approaches, maybe drop by the discord? https://discord.gg/neTwwEJ

So what kind of things have learnt to do better in GM since starting? Code wise or variables or organizing things?

Game looks good!

Little update - here's a short gif showing our new walk cycle and escalators in game. You can see much better quality longer vids on twitter - links at top of the thread.

How do you handle all that pathfinding? Looks like a really demanding game without native threading support in GameMaker, but seems to run smooth enough. I like the UI.

Thanks. I'm using gamemaker pathfinding right now, it's not needing to run all the time, it doesn't cause me any problems.

Seriously, this game looks amazing! Reminds me of a mix between Sim City 2000 and Theme Park (in a very good way). You have done a lot of great work on this one!

Endless Game Maker
Overcrowded was made on Game Maker??? Amazing, dude! I didn't know that! I saw that game popping up in many places. Even SplatterCat and Let's Game it Out covered it! How awesome is that?

Wish you the best! The game is pretty neat. =]
