Is it possible for the code to allow these four animations to fit naturally from a standstill without any gaps?

Do you mean have all 4 directions (and idle) in the same sprite? Your question is too vague for us; elaborate on what you want.

Your character should be animated around a center point (origin) which makes things easier. But if it doesn't you can actually move the origin of your sprite in Game Makers sprite editor, simply left click on the sprite and you will see a small crosshair +
