Is there Simple Character Animation Tutorial?

I'm a real beginner and am looking for a simple animation of my little character.( 64X64) If anyone can point me to a tutorial, it would really help me. I have been searching around ( and I've ordered a book, "The Game Makers Apprentice' ) in an attempt to understand how. It's a simple left right and jump two frame character. I can get it to slide around, but it needs some animation. Any help appreciated.
