How to stop enemies from chasing me through a wall

Hey everyone, I currently am having two problems.

1) I have a code that makes an enemy chase the character. This unfortunately is making it so the enemy runs through walls. The two things I would like to see my game do is make it so the enemy will start chasing the character once it sees it (so, once it hits a certain distance), and track down the character around walls, not through them.

Also, learning to develop your own pathfinding solution is a great programming exercise (although it will run slow in GML).
