Mac OSX How do I change my runtime feeds without everything breaking?

I'm new to GameMaker. I just decided to update my runtime feed from 2.2.1.287 to 2.2.1.291 and suddenly I'm getting the error message "project load failed. unable to load." I have tried restarting and even redownloading it but nothing is working. Please, how do I fix this?

You can roll back to a previous Runtime using the Preferences > Runtimes section. Just double-click on the runtime you want to change to after downloading it.

I recognize I can do that, but (at least in my current version) whenever I send someone the executable version of my game it tells them "Unable to find game!!:" even though it works perfectly well for me. I think this might be a bug associated with my current runtime and it's weird that I'm unable to update it.

I finally got the update to work by moving to the steam version of gamemaker 2 from the desktop version. Sadly, the executable version still refuses to work.
