Something that worked for me, both when I was using Remote Desktop and on a laptop:
Copy the following file:
C:\Program Files\GameMaker Studio 2\mesa\opengl32.dll
into:
C:\Program Files\GameMaker Studio 2
and restart GMS2.
If that works, then GMS2 has a problem running under OpenGL hardware acceleration on your machine and it's reverted to the Mesa software OpenGL driver. Even though it's software, it should run quite nicely.
