Legacy GM game maker 8.1 corrupted game

working on art, game ran out of memory 4 the process, i go 2 exit, instinctively save, exit, reopen gm8.1, and 'Error Loading: File seems to be corrupted'

it was just images
r these images backed up anywhere?

this is the 1st time in 14 yrs of using game maker that ive encountered this issue, is there any way of recovering the image files?

if not, is there a way of using game maker 8.1's sprite editing feature in gms2?
