[Game Jam] JamCraft 2018

About:

JamCraft is all about making games that have an emphasis on creation through combination. This could take the form of crafting items from raw materials, brewing potions, preparing food, discovering fighting combos, creating bases from construction blueprints, and so on and so forth. There is no limits on genre or style, but other participants will have the opportunity to rate you on your use of the "crafting" concept. You may use any tools you wish to create your game.

Who:

We are two veteran game programmer-jammers. We love making games and we love jamming. We decided to host a new game jam together, as if there wasn't enough game jams out there already, to give others another excuse to make a game! Double the hosts means double the support, and we aim to make this jam as accessible and fun as possible for everyone.

When:

JamCraft will run from the 2nd of March to the 16th. You must submit your game before the end of the jam. When the jam has ended, there will be a week of community voting. Please keep an eye on the jam timer on this page, as actual times will differ in different timezones, and any timekeeping other than on this page may not be accurate..

Where:

The jam is on itch.io. You can participate with the community in many ways: We have the Community forums there on the jam page, we have a Discord server and you can use #JamCraft on Twitter!

Rules:

  • Follow the jam concept/theme.
  • Show common sense and common decency towards others.
  • Game assets, unless Public Domain, must be created during the jam.
  • NSFW content is prohibited (no nudity, or anything that could be rated 18+).
  • Have fun!
You can submit any type of game. Even physical games can be submitted. If your game is likely to offend someone with it's content, please make a note of it on the game page and if applicable the README file (offensive content could be considered as; strong language, graphic violence, etc. See rule on common sense/decency). Same goes for medical notices (flashing images, etc).

FAQs:

  • Can I work in a team? Yes. As many people as you like.
  • Can I submit more than one game? You can try,
  • Can I use someone elses assets? Only if they're made for you during the jam by a team mate, or are Public Domain.
  • What if I miss the deadline? You can still submit late entries, but you have to contact us personally, with a link to your game page.
  • I'm in a team, can my team rate other games as well? Yes. Just make sure they're listed as Contributors on your game.

Sounds fun. That's a good theme, so I'll probably join.

Looks like it may overlap (or fall immediately after) the next GMC jam. But having a 2-week length should allow people to join both Jams, if they want.

Am I the only person on this forum who believes that gm game jams should be held on the Community chat subforum and not in the off topic? Sorry if it sounded a bit bilittle.

Edit: the following link is from the community chat subforum. I've had hosted jams in the community chat and I remember rui has too.

That topic isn't a discussion topic. It's only to announce a game jam (as per approval by @Alice).

As for jam discussion topics themselves... yes, they've been held in Community in the past. But unfortunately, many of them were poorly organized. And some were just abandoned when their creator got bored with them. That's why we began to discourage members from posting jam topics in Community.

More recent Community jam topics (like rui's) got @Nocturne approval beforehand. I assume @matharoo (and Jack Oatly) could request approve for their jam topic to be moved there, since he's demonstrated his ability to organize a game jam.

However, since his jam isn't restricted to GameMaker, that may not make sense for a GMC Community discussion topic.

Then, it is something for you guys (staff) to decide, whether or not you'll allow my thread into Community Chat. Also, do I have to ask Nocturne?

I feel this particular topic is more suited for Off Topic. As I said earlier, it isn't exclusively for GameMaker so it's not really a GMC Community event -- unlike Rui Rosario's one-script GML topic.

But Noc might feel differently. So if you feel it belongs in Community, it's better to ask him yourself.

Either way, I'll do my best to support your jam. It sounds fun, so I hope you can attract plenty of GMC entries.

Oh I didnt realize its an itch.io jam thing. In that case, its fine in off-topic... although this can be very dependent on audience-wise.

Actually the difference was mostly that Off-Topic is referred to as non-GM related topics and the type of audience that actively view it may not be the same kind of audience you seeek for participation.

JamCraft starts in 2 days, guys!

I'm probably gonna do a zombie survival game with base building (like Fortnite) and weapon crafting.
