GameMaker Character with a Lantern

Hey all, I have a character that has a lantern in a fight. I am trying to figure out how to move his light when he moves his lantern around.

Any ideas? I had thoughts of cutting the lantern out of each cell and layer two objects but how do I make the light source follow the pixels?
 
You might be able to do something with a uniquely colored pixel in the center of the lantern and maybe a shader... but it would take someone smarter than me to write such a shader.

Beyond that, you're best bet is to position the lantern by hand. Sprites base position + offset coordinates of lanter based on it's position in the current frame. Very labor intensive.
