Windows Can animated GIFs be added?

I know it can be done in GM2 but for original GM on Windows (version 8.1 I believe?) is it still possible? The gif isn't that long rather 4 or 5 seconds, or perhaps I can import it as an mp4 video?

Added to what, and how? As a resource via import? A sprite at runtime via sprite_add?

Either way, the import dialog or documentation of the function you're trying to use include this information.

For clarification, there's a 5 second animated gif I'm trying to add to the start of the project, it's not technically a sprite

A sprite in GMS is an animation. create a sprite resource and import your GIF. I believe GMS < 2 can, but if it can't, just make it a spritesheet or split into into frames to load using:
