Mac OSX Bizarre Sprite Lock-up

I have a 16 frame, full screen sprite animation. It is only called well into the game and it works fine. But if I edit it in ANY WAY inside GMS2 (I can't even delete it from the project) the game won't get past the opening menu screen (and its not called there). Even minor edits like moving the origin of the sprite or deleting a frame cause the issue. Even removing all reference to it and then deleting it does the same. WTF!!!!

Anybody encountered this or any idea what causes it or a solution?

I've come up with an inelegant workaround. I've put it in its own texture group and then deselected it in the tick boxes in 'Use Group On..' so it doesn't get exported in the project. I've created a new, identicle sprite and done the required editing and is working fine.
