Windows Best way to create terrain

Hey guys, i'm new to GameMaker, so this is probably a noob question:
Which is the best way to create a terrain (so the player won't fall out of screen)for this kind of background?
Making an object for every 32 pixel is just too time consuming and probably a lot of objects can lower the performance.

You're probably going to want to look at colliding with a surface, or use the physics engine to collide with it. Should be some old examples out there somewhere.
