Background surface

I'm somewhat new to surfaces, how do I create a 'background surface' that goes behind the application surface, so I can have background effects without having to mess with the objects on the application surface? Or am I just trying to do something the hard way

There's background_create_from_surface, or you can just set the depth of the object drawing onto application surface to sit behind all the other objects. It will be first in draw sequence that way, and everything else gets drawn on top.
