Mac OSX Asset Compiler hell

    Hi guys,

    I am running GM:S2, IDE v2.1.4.288, Runtime v2.1.4.203 on macOS and the last few weeks I am experiencing more and more these Asset Compiler crashes.

    The game compiles 1 out of 10 times and I've tried searching around forums, grasping to every possible piece of information but nothing helped so far. This happens most of the time also during cleaning the project.

    I've tried:
    • Cleaning the project & resource paths
    • Reinstalling Mono
    • Linking mono version Current to 4.8 (anyway I have only single one mono version)
    • Installing latest runtimes, deleting older runtimes
    • Restoring every settings to defaults
    • Smashing the compile button million times hoping it will stop one day

    I am trying to find some consistency between the crashes. If I restart the whole GameMaker the problem stops, after 1-2 compilations it's there again.

    My memories a bit sketchy on when exactly this happened, but I had a similar thing recently where the asset compiler would crash almost every build. Cleaning the project would help somewhat, but needed to do that almost every build. Not sure if it was because the project size I was working on was very large, or it was because I was using a previous run-time.

    Then I remember a new runtime / IDE patch came out pretty quickly, then the problem went away.

    Are you building both using VM or YYC? Have you tried a new blank project?

    I'm on runtime 2.1.4.212 IDE 2.1.4.288 on Mac Sierra 10.12.6 (not High Sierra) and haven't had any asset compiler crashes with these.

    But I also cleaned out the project I was working on (basically rebuilding it from scratch to clear out the junk that had built up over time), so not sure if it is that or the runtime.

    @IndianaBones appreciate that, I am currently running on Runtime v2.1.4.212, cleaned the cache, paths but still Asset Compiler is crashing. Our project is quite large with a lot of assets so I will try re-importing all of it from scratch. It would definitely help to have batch import now at least there are some 3rd party batch import tools on Windows

    So I've done the last thing that I haven't tested yet - updating Mono to v5.12 aaaand it's fixed it seems that Mono v4.8.0 cannot handle projects with a lot of assets.

    Hallelujah! I think this might have fixed it for me too. I was about ready to off myself over these failed compiles... thank you!

    Now I don't have to wait 6 months for YoYo to answer my support ticket and say "shrug we can't do anything without a sample project".
