Discussion Anime

I've noticed recently that quite a few people here on the forum are interested in anime. Yet, I've also noticed, it isn't much discussed but rather talked about in passing. So with this thread I'd like to explore a couple of things.

Firstly and most simply, for those of you who enjoy anime, what do you like? What are some of your favorite shows, genres, directors, or studios? Do you have a list? How involved are you, such as with buying merchandise or going to events?

Secondly, what are your opinions of the medium? This applies to anyone regardless of their experience (or lack of) watching anime. Personally I've been pretty secretive about enjoying it as it has a bad reputation outside of our little circles. Hell even in our circles we poke fun at each other for liking certain shows or even anime in general. I've increasingly cared less about what people think and this topic is evidence of that. Perhaps this air of shyness is why the topic hasn't been created already. I'm interested in what you guys think.

I watch a lot of anime. Vento Aureo has been great so far. My favorite overall is Evangelion. I like to watch anything really.
Not secretive at all about it. My friends all watch it, some more than me, others less.

I used to watch it a lot. We had a club when I was in college and we watched stuff fan subtitled directly from Japan. I copied each other's VHS and some crappy digital copies. I have three VCRs, so I used to copy off a lot of what I rented from the video stores. And something came up for sale at Hollywood Video, I would buy it even if it sucked. Nowadays I don't really watch it on me. I used to be into the shows that went on for over a hundred episodes and I was eventually like, you know, 💩💩💩💩 this. Most anime doesn't interest me at all anymore. I actually like Devilman Crybaby because it was closer to the stuff I watched in my teens. I typically only purchase DVDs of animators that I actually like. IIprefer subs over dubs. I used to be heavily into buying manga too.

I used to watch a bunch as a teenager, there was a tiny section in the back of my rental store that had a VHS selection of anime. Stuff like Akira, Ranma 1/2, Bastard!, and a few others. I eventually grew out of it, but the very rare thing will still interest me like Dragon Ball Super or Berserk(Big fan back in the day but this new series looks awful using too much poor 3D).

Yeah but it's still nice reliving the old memories. Plus the gratutitous pornographic violence at the end. lol

Anime is great. A little like games: I find myself slowly becoming jaded and bored with the medium regularly, only to be completely amazed and blown away by something that comes out and makes me go "oh yeah, that's why I love this."

I think professional Japanese animators are the best draftsmen in the history of mankind, no exaggeration. I think Da Vinci himself would weep at the incredible skill and talent on display in anime like the original Ghost in the Shell.

Princess Mononoke is what made me go "yeah, I'm gonna draw," when I was a kid. Complete love and respect to Japanese animators and anime in general.

I think Da Vinci would be extremely confused more than anything.

I need to get around to watching Evangelion. Not sure why I've put it off for so long.

"How the 💩💩💩💩 did they make pictures move?! What the hell is this?! What's a robot?! This 💩💩💩💩 is crazy!" -Da Vinci, probably.

Yeah you have a point, lol. Still, the ridiculous skill on display would shine through to any serious artist, and I think Da Vinci was probably pretty serious. He'd be impressed after his head stopped spinning, hahah!

Evangelion is one of mankind's crowning achievements. You should watch it, for sure, hahah. =D

I've been mostly into gritty/gory stuff for awhile but after a bit of pushing I went to check out Anohana and hhhh, if you want a good emotional time I'd highly recommend it. Aside from that, Darker than Black will always be one of my favourite shounens.

My all time favorite anime is Gurren Lagann but I haven't see much anime though. Love it for having episodes that for the most part don't waste your time
and constantly keep the plot moving while being over the top, epic and emotionally investing.

Most seem to prefer the first half of the anime but I prefer the second half by a slight margin.

I advocate "5 cm per second." It's truly a beautiful piece of art where half the frames in the movie would make a nice wallpaper. I mean look at it:

The story is slow but is very well done. I've shown it off to 3 of my friends in real life and all of them liked it. Even my friend who doesn't like anime liked it.

In addition to Studio Ghibli...

Slayers (my first rental; almost all eps and movies pirated, have some manga and the Sega Saturn games)

Vampire Princess Miyu OVA (another first rental, my first dark anime, TV show is ok too)

Record Of Lodoss War (another first rental, essentially a great exple of a Dungeons & Dragons show)

Urotsukidouji (got grounded for showing this to another kid lol, but I love it and was one of my first rentals...somehow lol)

La Blue Girl (say what you will about me, I care not!)

Magical Twilight (I showed this to a girl, got laid afterward)

Dragon Half (seriously, if you haven't seen this two-episode OVA, you are missing out! One of the funniest anime ever!)

Mahoujin Guru-guru (another classic fantasy comedy, the video games were kind of interesting too)

Di Gi Charat (another chibi character show, but in Akihabara)

Serial Experiments Lain (the ending broke me for some reason)

Haibane Renmei (same guy as Lain, every time i watched it with a girl, i had to console her afterward ;) )

Anything by Satoshi Kon (I pirated Paranoia Agent, but I bought all his movies and manga)

One-Punch Man (marathoned it!)

Fushigi Yuugi (I'm man enough to say I love that show, I even have two wallscrolls hanging in my den)

Evangelion (if we can look past the last two episodes and just skip to the movie lol)

His And Her Circumstances (cute series by Gainax rife with budget issues lol)

Cowboy Bebop (didn't like it at first, but it grew on me)

Macross Plus (first anime that visually and aurally blew me away and turned me on to Yoko Kanno)

The girl who leapt through time (I actually liked all three movies, both live-actions and anime)

Hikaru no Go (screw Yu gi oh, this show was intense! lol I still suck at go though)

Dominion Tank Police (another of Masamune Shirow's fun little stories)

FLCL (The Pillows toured the US forba reason)

Dirty Pair (I have the TV series on DVD, the movies copied, Project Eden is my favorite)

Excel Saga (I have all the manga, pirated the show cuz they are mostly fansubbed, the show is so much more twisted than the manga, especially the last episode!)

Puni Puni Poemi (same director as Excel Saga and just as zany, perhaps moreso lol)

Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt (such a dirty comedy)

Shinobuden [Ninja Nonsense] (it's so immature, but I think it's hilarious)

Roujin Z (geriatric sci-fi lol, quirky fun)

Captain Tylor (trope-tastic but I still love it)

Gunsmith Cats/Riding Bean (have the manga too)

Rurouni Kenshin (have themanga, soundtrack, and live-action too)

Samurai Champloo (I've watched this sooo many times)

Bubblegum Crisis [2040] (I have the soundtracks to both series)

Cardcaptor Sakura (cute, well-known Clamp anime seen most)

Angelic Layer (troperiffic Clamp anime that I loved immediately)

All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku-nuku (do you like catgirls? do you like Megumi Hayashibara's cute voice? you'll love Nuku-nuku, then!)

Devilman (not the old TV show, just the OVA and Crybaby)

Gegege no Kitaro (pick a season, I love them all! lol)

Hakaba Kitaro (gritty version based on above series' origin manga)

Full Metal Panic/Fumoffu (my favoritest mobile suit series, I love the soundtrack also)

Shinesman (parody of Super Sentai, intentionally trope-filled)

Armitage III (I remember the soundtrack...and Kiefer Sutherland's bland acting mostly, but I still like it lol)

Battle Angel Alita (ok, I don't like the anime, but it's the cheapest way to introduce people to James Cameron's new movie)

Mai-HiME (great soundtrack in this cruel battle royale trope show)

Bokurano [Ours] (another cruel battle royale trope with one of my favorite openings)

City Hunter (the tv show and the movies)

.hack\\Sign (better than Sword Art Online in every way, especially the epic soundtrack)

Full Metal Alchemist (the first one, although Brothwrhood has its points too)

Great Teacher Onizuka [G.T.O.] (I love love love the live action series and movie, but the anime is also great!)

Azumanga Daioh (hilarious schoolgirls show)

Pani Poni Dash! (like a cross between GTO and Dragon Half, you practically need the companion guides provided by fansubbers to make sense of the thousands of inside jokes and references)

I My Me Strawberry Eggs (do you like transvestites flirting with young girls? maybe you will after watching this cute, innocent show)

Chobits (I felt dirty for liking this)

Kodocha [Children's Toys] (do yourself a favor and try to find the fansubs, this show is nuts! Also introduced me to Tomoe Shinohara)

Magical Play (weird, silly show... jard to describe)

Ebichu! (hilarious shorts about a dirty-minded hamster)

Ippatsu Kiki Musume (series of shorts about a woman trying not to die from whatever situation she finds herself in)

Nekojiru (seriously messed up shorts about abcat family)

Cat Soup (psychedelic silent film based on Nekojiru, unforgettable viewing experience)

Kamichu (not to be confused with Ebichu, cute show about a middle schooler who becomes a goddess)

Children Who Chase Lost Voices (I liked it)

Letter To Momo (was almost too tropey for me, but I'm sappy and cried near the end)

Melody Of Oblivion (never got to finish this, it's like, a weird wet dream from Gainax. MOOO! lol)

@RichHopelessComposer Maeda was an innovator! And Hideki Takayama added such DEEP elements to Maeda's original story. Although U3 and U4 were pretty weak... I think U4 was the weakest of the bunch. For some reason I liked Caesar as a villain more than a bunch of telepathic kids.

...Or did you not know there were 4 Urotsukidoji movies? Demon Womb is by far my favorite of the series.

I wasn't commenting on the quality of Urotsukidouji. I was just joking that if Siolfor was surprised you mentioned La Blue Girl that he should probably be surprised at the mention of Urotsukidouji, too, hahah. I actually haven't even watched any of these movies, because they were never really my bag growing up. I might be able to appreciate them nowadays though, so maybe I'll check them out. I was thinking of giving Wicked City a watch the other day after seeing Kojima recommend it.

I'm watching and loving Sangetsu no Lion right now, which is probably a slightly different atmosphere, heheh. :')

I contemplated Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. I liked those gritty, 80s anime when I was younger. Some justbplain disturbed me. But they're a mixed bag. It's kinda like Yoma and Ninja Scroll - dark shonen anime that, imho, aren't all that entertaining or thought-provoking but are cool the first time you watch them.

Some shows I just watch out of nostalgia for those early rental years. Venus Wars. Rhea Gall Force. The Patlabor movies. Previously mentioned shonen anime.

Some I watch just totremember college. Ranma 1/2. Berserk. Hellsing. Gundam Wing.
It's really difficult to say which anime I actually like and which I hold onto for simply nostalgia's sake. It's kinda like saying you like Space Jam.

Sometimes I just like the soundtracks. Project A-ko is a nice, fun anime with one of my most loved soundtracks, but the series as a whole is forgettable for me. Akira has one of the awesomest soundtracks, but the movie is just too heavy for me to enjoy. Orgun is a bland space opera, but has tracks by Susumu Hirasawa.

Oh, I guess i should add Vampire Hunter D to my list of likes, since I have the manga that was made based on the novels.

Urotsukidouji jk don't lol

Because you like Ghibli:
-Sangetsu no Lion (mistranslated as "March Comes in Like a Lion," for some reason): deals with depression, becoming a better person, and shogi. Love it.

-Usagi Drop: man adopts his adorable niece (or aunt, somehow?!) Extremely wholesome.

-Jellyfish Princess: shy girl learns to value herself more.

-Nichijou: extremely funny, surprisingly wholesome character development

-Natsume Yuujinchou: boy is spiritually sensitive. Moves to a town where his deceased grandmother (iirc) used to live. Spirits recognize his family's aura. He learns more about his family from the spirits in town, and solves problems for the youkai and stuff. Nice show, sometimes very sad.

-Cells at Work? (Super wholesome, but lots of anime tropes. I loved it, though.)

Because you liked Ninja Scroll:
-Kenshin OVA: beautiful
-Vagabond (manga): biographical fiction of Musashi. Pretty rad.

Because you liked Ghost in the Shell/Akira:
-Jin-Roh: beautiful, again.
-Psycho-Pass: Not as smart as GitS, but still very fun to watch. Some *amazing* music, too.
-Evangelion: top shelf.
-Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World): Fantastic hard sci-fi. I read thousand page hard science fiction anthologies every year. This anime is hard science fiction.
-Perfect Blue/anything Satoshi Kon has made

You'll probably like/love most of these. They all range from "very good" to "amazing." =D

Actually, you liked Ninja Scroll, so you might like Urotsukidouji and Wicked City, too. Beware of hyper violent rape-demons and vagina-dentata spider ladies though, lol.

@Niels

The fact there are two live-action adaptations of Wicked City I guess says something about it. lol

Urotsukidouji was one of the first (if not THE first) manga/anime to establish tentacle rape because depictions of genitalia were forbidden. Tentacles entering women was fine, though. lol Anyway, the manga was pretty tame (the demons were lizards). The anime took things to a Devilman level of disturbingness; it made the violence and sex much more gratuitous as was popular in the 80s, and the demons much more hideous. Demon Womb toned things down a bit and focused more on story (and sex), so it's easily the best of the Urotsukidouji series, even though its place in the storyline is unclear.

I never watched much anime until last year or so when I got demotivated in my hobbies due to problems with every computer I used (the cause seems to be the USB stick that I plug into every computer I used). I wasn't much for slice of life comedy but since a friend who liked it recommended it to me I do find it to be a nice genre to watch as nothing out of the norm tends to happen, and thus no dramatic tragedies/deaths that I'd rather avoid.

Some of my favourite shows are I guess K on, Demi-chan, both of which are slice of life; and Parasyte was also good, though it does have deaths (which I expected beforehand). I think Parasyte is classified as a horror and I do enjoy some horror in general.

I also have D-frag as an anime I often reference but that's due to personal experiences more than the quality of the show.

Parasyte was recommended by a friend after he caught wind that I watched an anime, and that's really what got me hooked. Great stuff there. K-on, too, if you're trash like us ;)

I'll just re-iterate Hikaru No Go. Almost nobody in our anime club had even heard of go. We were like one of the characters in the anime who mistook it for Othello. After watching most of the series, I started up a go club and we had about 15 or so members for the time being. Most of us in the club were introduced to it through Hikaru No Go.

It was an anime about a board game...

And it was good.

Sure, it was filled with a lot of tropes popular in anime at that time. It wasn't really shonen nor shojo; although the protagonist and his antagonist were both boys, the series was written by a woman and does have some elements in it more akin to shojo stories. (Consequently, there's some homoerotic fan fiction out there. Sickos... They are just kids!) Boy finds a dusty board in his grandpa's attic which turns out to be possessed by the spirit of an ancient go master (that's a real thing, by the way) who convinces the boy to play go for him (since he's a ghost and doesn't have a body), but eventually the boy decides he wants to learn to play for himself and establishes a rivalry with an up-and-coming professional go player (that's also a real thing). Forget Yu-Gi-Oh or Beyblades with their spritzed-up matches highlighted by fantastic beasts materializing out of nowhere; Hikaru No Go had intense matches with no glitz or glam to hide the fact that you're watching two kids play a board game. ...And like a lot of anime that starts of cutesy and light, it gets somber near the end (but in a good way).

Basically the series served as a window into the world of Japanese go (and to a much lesser extent Chinese weiqi and Korean baduq circles). The games on the Gameboy Advance were pretty slow and the AI was weak, but they were cute and were decent introductory games to go. Unlike the show, the second GBA game added a lot of glitz and glam to make it more exciting to play. It's just too bad they're in Japanese.

Edit: I had forgotten that the games even make fun of the "action lines" that were prevalent in the anime. lol

No I haven't yet, but I was never a fan of shogi. Still, the idea of a show about shogi intrigues me admittedly.

I'm glad someone else has heard of Hikaru no Go. I came across the manga when I was a kid. All my friends thought I was nuts when I tried to explain it to them. "Okay, so basically it's YuGiOh, but with Go..."

I've been playing shogi for 9 years in case you can't tell that already from my avatar lol (I had that one even back in the old GMC). Shogi's basically chess but a million times better in my opinion, with most pieces being able to be promoted, and captured pieces being able to be deployed back onto the board as part of the captor's army. Shogi seemed to have been having a boom lately outside of Japan due to the recent shogi anime coming out like March Comes in like a Lion and Ryuuou no Oshigoto.

D-frag is an anime that uses games (in general, so including board games, computer games, social games, and analog games) as a bit of a theme. It's supposed to be a game-making club and it kinda reminds me of the GMC since I figured the closest thing I have irl to a game-making club is basically the GMC/GMC:Discord. Though actual time dedicated to particular games isn't a lot, it's mostly a random humour anime.

I have to ask the people of this thread is Death Note good? I have recently got the desire to watch it but I wasn't sure about the quality of it.
It makes a good first impression with how serious it appears to be from things I have seen on the internet but I was worried it might just be
another cliched anime with that silly anime humor and crazy faces. If it only has a few moments like that I could tolerate it.

The premise intrigues me but I'm not sure if it executes it well. A lot of the anime that are considered good I usually just find obnoxious due to the comedy or bland due to the story.

Like Dragon Ball, Naruto and Fairy Tail I found very bland.

Don't get me wrong I love the character designs and the iconic powers of Dragon Ball and Naruto
and Fairy Tail but I dislike them due to various problems.

The problems I have with Dragon Ball are for one that there is little weight to the story because
everyone just can be wished back with the Dragon Balls so you never feel the slightest bit worried. If someone dies I don't really care because I know they will be back.
Shenron is a badass dragon but he is one of the core problems with Dragon Balls lack of weight to anything that happens in the show.

Another problem is that in the Dub they changed Goku's character to be more heroic and
generic where as he is supposed to be more self centered due to his Sayian blood.
They took one thing interesting about Goku and made him bland.

Another problem I have is that Villains are usually the arms folded, full of themselves kind.
Vegeta, Frieza and Cell are all like this and it gets old fast, I love their character designs
but their personalities are bland garbage. At least Dragon Ball Z abridged made the
villains actually have personality.

Another problem is in the story they constantly find reasons to keep Goku out of the fights.
He spends time dead on king kais planet, and then he is hospitalized for awhile,
then he takes forever getting to planet Namek on a space ship then eventually he spends
time in some sort of healing liquid tube, I'm sure there is more but you get my point.
They needlessly keep Goku busy and usually in the most lame ways possible.

Another problem is they tend to sideline lots of characters and make them pathetic.
Like I would love to see more of Tien because he has tons of unique abilities.
It seems in this universe intense training ain't worth a damn if you ain't some Sayian or alien.
In a anime like Gurren Lagann all you needed is dedication and fighting spirit
to achieve immense power. Why does Dragon Ball need to constantly rely on have your "potential unlocked" through freaking drinks and fruits and old wise masters.

Yet another problem I have is that in Dragon Ball even without the filler there is so little actual
action and so much pointless talking battles just tend to drag on forever.
Usually saying stuff like "Their power level is rising" or villains are like "Face it I'm so much stronger than you!" Usually one or 2 attacks are made and then everyone stands around to bicker at each other.
Even Dragon Ball Z kai doesn't help with this I don't think.

I'm sure people will hate me for this but Gurren Lagann is what Dragon Ball should have been
and yes I know it came much later then Dragon Ball and even Dragon Ball Z but that doesn't change the fact that Gurren Lagann does everything better Story, slow moments, sad moments,
action and sheer badassery. and it's a freaking mech anime!! Gurren Lagann does not waste your time, almost every moment
is interesting whether it's a moment of action or a small quiet moment between 2 characters.
In fact I think ANY anime that has a strong focus on action should be learning from the way Gurren Lagann delivers a story and action. Also it helps that Gurren Lagann has an amazing Dub.

To be fair to Naruto I haven't actually watched the show because I heard it was ripe with filler
which irritates me to no end. Maybe the the actual story and characters make up for the filler.

And to be fair to Fairy Tail I only watched maybe 17 episodes because it turned me off when it seemed like not much of a story was actually happening and the obnoxious humor got old.

Thoughts and opinions anyone on my take? I would love to hear what you guys think.

I never got into Dragon Ball. I tried. I watched GT without subtitles because I thought Pan's voice was cute. LOL I do agree with your comment about Goku. He was so different in the Japanese version. I did find Buu to be an entertaining villain, though.

Naruto got old for me eventually. It was one of the anime that I dropped because it kept going and going, along with Bleach and Inu Yasha (which is a shame, because I liked Inu Yasha at first). And oh my god did it get repetitive. And one of the biggest issues with anime like that is inevitably run out of money or lose staff members. All I really liked from it was the music. LOL. Asian Kung Fu Generation. Orange Range. FLOW. The ending credits with Akeboshi's "Wind" was beautiful, I thought; my favorite from the series. I can't even watch Shippuden or Boruto.

I couldn't get into Gurren Laggan. I might give it another try, but it just never sucked me in.

I lost interest in DeathNote. I couldn't finish it. HOWEVER, with that said, it's not a horrible series. I do think it is one of those typical anime that draws you in with the first few episodes, drags you through the mire in the middle (where I dropped it), and then has a couple interesting twists and turns near the end. I never finished it, but I do think about going back to it sometimes.

Rurouni Kenshin is a great anime if you haven't seen it. It has a blend of comedy and drama (some of it kind of sappy, though) and outlandish swordplay. But it's a weird anime that starts off good, gets friggin' INCREDBLE in the middle, then has a stroke and twitches on the floor drooling in the end. It's multiple story arcs, so it's okay for it to do that. It also inspired SNK's arcade fighting series The Last Blade.

Yeah I guess it depends on if you like lots of mech action and completely ridiculous situations. Although I wouldn't focus too much on the unrealistic stuff because the point of the craziness
is to drive home the emotional journey. There is a uprising amount of maturity in this anime when it comes to issues like dealing with depression and loss.
It's probably the best thing I ever watched where it's core message was about "Believing in yourself" As corny as that sounds it's handled really well especially the way they turn the cliche on it's head.
And the story presents some really interesting moral dilemmas that really make you think.

It's a pretty short anime, only 26 half an hour episodes if you don't count the recap episode. I would finish it up and watch some of the very good youtube videos analyzing it's moral complexity.

Also shockingly Kirby did a parody of it:

drags you through the mire in the middle (where I dropped it)
That's a shame, what is the middle like? Is it the kind where the plot isn't really moving forward and they are just kinda doing pointless things? Sort of like a filler but not filler situation?

But it's a weird anime that starts off good, gets friggin' INCREDBLE in the middle, then has a stroke and twitches on the floor drooling in the end.
Sounds like a fun anime, although if it has such a bad ending as you say that would be a shame. I will say I haven't really seen much anime mostly because the ones I seen were so dull for me, and when I
was suggested Gurren Lagann a few years ago I was extremely hesitant and was shocked to see how little it wasted your time, it constantly kept the plot moving forward or delivering hype.

Now Dragon Ball fans I know I spent most of my last post ranting about Dragon Ball, but can I just say these 2 songs from the Japanese Dragon Ball Z are awesome!

Even though I don't really like watching the show it has some pretty awesome music.
Also I think we can all agree that Dragon Ball has some of the most iconic powers in all of fictional media.

It's not a HORRIBLE ending, it's just forgettable. lol

Oh it's also called Samurai X... Retarded title.

The live-action movies were decent too. Like, oh my god the costumes were uncanny.

Prequel OVA (slow drama, but good)
TV Series (lighter drama, some comedy)
