I'm looking for resources or examples to learn how to make a hole punching server for a multiplayer game. I realise that its a huge topic. I've read most of the gamemaker network manual and looken around the forum for info on the core issues.

I was able to get UDP holepunching to work but was too unreliable for what I want...
Looking for someone to make Python master server that can holepunch GM clients to GM servers... with TCP...

So after seeing that other topic, I decided to test UDPHP.
TL;DR, you can circumvent the need for a server if you just connect two sockets together. And holy crap, it works...
But what I'd love help with, is checking how often this works in the real world. Because there's no point implementing...
