I would look into using enums and states for this.
This would make it easy to keep track of what is happening.
You could set flag at game start, something like:
You could also use a separate sprite with the x origin offset as -distance and set the angle to the spaceships angle -180.

Just loop through the list of ids. If it is on the list don't do anything.
Otherwise add to list and perform damage (reduce hp, create effect, etc.)
