The Sky Is No Limit


What is this about?

This thread is a dev-log about my current work in progress, which I hope will be finished (or at least in a stable version) by the start of september 2016.
Anything italicized here is a work in progress and won't be included in the game until a future update. On this thread, feel free to:
  • Ask me questions about the game, which I will do my best to reply to.
  • Report any bugs you may find. A bug is anything you think is not working as intended.
  • Name some limits. This game is all about breaking them, and I will do my best to give this option to the main character.
"The Sky is No limit" is a wordless exploration/action game in which you control a human who loses his limits as the adventure goes on. When the game starts, you are blessed by your best friend: the wind. You become a god-like entity capable of running at incredible speeds and defying gravity. However, not everyone is pleased by your newly acquired powers and soon enough, you will make enemies. This game is heavily inspired by "Journey" and "Asura's wrath".

How to play?

Main controls:
  • WASD (or ZQSD): move. W and S will be a short jump-like movement to change planes.
  • Space bar: jump.
  • Left click: attack / use items
  • Right click: interact / pick up items
The Wind (purple): if you hold your movement keys long enough, you become blessed by the Wind.
  • Tap A(Q) or D to break the speed limit
  • Hold space bar to break the gravity limit. Falling may cause damage.
The Earth (brown): if you hold left click long enough, you become blessed by the Earth.
The Fire (red): if you hold right click long enough, you become blessed by the Fire.
The Water (cyan) if you hold opposite movement keys long enough, you become blessed by the Water.

  • Changed some shader-related colors
  • Added an objective marker
  • Added the ability to destroy the sun by punching it
01/10/2016 - v0.3
  • Changed the main character's face
  • Added 2 new areas: the temple, and the red island.
  • Added 2 major constellations: wind and earth
  • Added an intro and cutscenes
  • Added a tutorial.
  • Finished 1/5 boss fights.
07/08/2016 - v0.2
  • Changed the graphic style to solid colors
  • Added basic biomes
  • Added landscape coloring
  • Added the forest area
  • Added trees
  • Added a day/night cycle
  • Added stars and constellations
  • Added frogs, spiders, and blue things
  • Fixed a shader crashing issue. If the problem persists please tell me.
  • There is now one playable quest in the forest.
07/08/2016 - v0.1
  • You are now a blond individual with long hair
  • Find the highest mountain, the spirit of earth awaits
  • Fixed some of the physics issues
  • Added particles
  • Added a Boss fight with 3 sequences
  • Added some audio distortion depending on zoom and health
  • You can now lose the game
  • You can now win the game

  • You are the blue circle
  • You are alone
  • You can jump high and run fast.
  • You can dig holes in the ground.
  • The game contains placeholder musics.

I'm not a real artist so art will probably be very minimalistic (basic shapes with a bit of shading) but I'll do my best!
There will, however, be a plethora of cool visual effects.

The assets that you are currently using... Are any of them Sprite based, because I'd love to help if I could.

There are lots of different artists at the GMC, all specializing in different types of art, from vector to pixel to hand drawn load ins. It would be a real shame for such a mechanically beautiful game to be accompanied by sub-par artwork, so if you don't think you have the skills to give it the justice it deserves then pick an artstyle than pick an artist who specialises in that art style. It's always nice to have a buddy to bounce ideas off of as well.

Either way, like the others here have said, this does look extremely promising, especially at such an early stage in it's development.

Why is the ginger samurai attacking mullet girl with that... *ahem*... foreign object? I don't blame her for running!

Your gameplay looks so good and it has such depth to it but your graphics are hilarious. I'm kinda hoping these are just placeholders!

No one is attacking nobody for now, they're just intently staring at each other!

If ever I get an actual artist, then those graphics will be placeholders :p until then they're the genuine thing!
I'm going for the hilarious look.

I'm about to build a world with a bunch of citizens. If you guys have any citizen ideas (profession, likes, dislikes, abilities, quest) feel free to add them here and I may add them to the game!

Hmm well I DO use shaders in the game. I'll have to put in an option to remove the shaders if necessary then. Will do so in the next version!
What system do you use?
 
I'm thinking of changing my graphics style to pure solid-color like the background. Would it look better? Would definitely be easier to draw.

I must say Im really impressed by the concept, the transitions and effects. But your art.. Have you considered event downloading some sprites from gaemdevmarket or similar?

For this project I won't be using any artistic assets because that's kind of what i'm going for right now.
But my next project will have loads of hand-made assets :)
