Chasing random opportunity is for people too unmotivated or untalented to chase their dreams. Chase whatever works for you. :p
This is not necessarily true. It is not always possible to achieve your dreams outright, given financial or situational restrictions. Taking opportunities can put you in a position where bringing your dreams into reality becomes easier. Or rather, sometimes compromises have to be made. It is better to take advantage of opportunities than to grind away doing something that isn't as appealing or fulfilling.

An example of an opportunity could be a job with a better salary (which may mean less overall work to get in a position where you can work towards your dreams, or getting contacts who may be beneficial towards your later ventures.). Often times, you can put yourself in a position where you create the opportunities which lead you towards your dreams and aspirations.

I can't help but disagree... The best things that have happened to me in my life have always been caused by me taking some random opportunity, and I certainly don't lack motivation, and I wouldn't say I'm talentless. In another topic I posted my career history and almost every change I've made in my life (from jobs, to country, to women) has been because some random opportunity came up and I went "To hell with it! Let's see what happens...". I wouldn't be working with YYG just now if it wasn't for random opportunity, and although it's taken nearly 30 years, I am now working in pretty much my dream job, I pretty much have my dream family, and I am pretty much living the life I wanted and that I chose.

What I'm saying is that sometimes random opportunity is the best there is when you want to accomplish something. Routine is EASY. Routine is SAFE, but routine doesn't put you in new situations, nor does it make you have to adapt to survive and learn new things to move on. I'm not saying you should take every opportunity that presents itself, but if an offer or a chance comes up and your gut says "DO IT" and you get all butterfly-stomach when you think about it, then maybe, just maybe, it's something you should consider.

:)

I just would need a stable life (which is almost impossible in Italy if you're not rich) and fix my family's financial crisis caused by politicians' total indifference towards welfare. I would also like to live in a place full of ordinary people and not the totally dishonest and uncivil jerks most italian citizens are. In some zones there is also the "friends with benefits" and the "more women i "go to bed with" the more i'm the greatest human ever" mentality. And i can't afford change, i'm literally stuck into this nasty country. I wanted to pursue animation but if you live in Italy you can't do it without being in contact with crooks. There are very few places i could do if i wanted to pursue what i like to do and aren't even the greatest choices.

That's one reason i started learning how to make a good game and sell it.

(i'd like to note that i always wanted to make my own video game since i was a kid and played Nintendo games so it's not something i do without passion)

This is very true, and I agree completely. I guess I meant "talented and motivated enough to overcome the situation you find yourself in." Of course, some people start from much more favorable positions in life than others, financially, family-wise, health-wise, etc. I count myself very lucky for the life I was born into, and realize not all people are so lucky. Some people would have to work much harder than I would to achieve the same things, at no fault of their own. My original post wasn't meant to insult those people. I only meant that if your dream is within your means, you should go for it. I agree that people should avoid throwing lucky opportunities away, too. Thanks for the good reply. =)

Your post is pretty close in flavor to MishMash's, and I also agree with yours. I didn't mean that we ignore the lucky opportunities life presents to us, I only meant that we should chase our dreams if they're reachable. Some of the best things that have happened to me have been from diving into things. =)

1) Be able to walk 1 mile (nonstop) on my hands. Currently able to walk 100 feet on hands.

2) Develop the best selling educational game in the world. Current game has sold only 10 copies on Amazon.

3) Develop a FREE energy device. (Current "on paper" design involves a stepping machine and an electric generator)

4) Live to be 200 years old. (and still look 40)

5) Play HALO with 3 HOT chicks.

1.) Publish my game and sell it.
2.) Earn my doctorates in computer science.
3.) Quit my job as a programmer and take up teaching. I think it would be nice to hand the torch to someone else at that point so they can succeed.

Ultimate Goal:
I want to live away from everything, grow my own vegetables, raise animals, and sit quietly in my own cabin. And I'll pop into town every now and then to trade some of my goods with others. The only thing I want to use my money on would be vacations and gifts. I also want to travel the world and see if I can make at least one good friend in each country I visit.

To me, THAT is true wealth.

Hmmm.... My dream is to be happy and make the best out of everything that happens to me.
I don't have a specific job/goal, I will just take opportunities, while keeping my life SIMPLE, and be as nice and loving to everyone around me, always be optimistic and see the good in people, situations and so on. I will always be happy like that, no matter what happens. Because I don't think doing things TO be happy actually makes a person happy (chasing your dreams), but what really makes people happy, is being happy with what you do, whatever that is.

But that doesn't mean I don't have desires, I would absolutely love to become a concert pianist and classical composer. But I won't dream hard, or hope about that, since it's just a possibility. But it's always fun to imagine myself doing big concerts.

I dream of not being a slave of society. Wish me GL on that one.

I'm a social outcast, poor, mentally and physically unhealthy to the point where everyday life is a strain, brought on by abuses from the past that shaped my being and terrible living conditions with a dysfunctional family. No one takes me seriously and barely anyone stays in my life. My life has ultimately been pretty stressful, empty and pathetic. Smallest violin.

I just want a stable life and someone to share it with. Gamemaker honestly seems like the most realistic way of reaching that goal. I know I'm more than capable of producing quality engine peices and ideas, but like almost every other peice of my life, I dont stay motivated. The grog of everyday life taps in. My current goal is just to get through school and get some level of job, even a mediocre one. After this semester, I'm done. I'm going to be looking for a job with what certs I can get and then I'm getting serious about this game development. I was even debating going back this semester over going full time dev. So far my biggest setback is initial funding to get assets made that are not easily in my scope. I honestly believe I would have what it takes to hit the major scene with a little boost and a written plan, so that's my current goal. Despite putting out very little over my time. I'm pretty confident in this idea. Only time I make progress is when I throw myself to the wind, into a dangerous, high risk situation.

I currently have a greenlight application on hold till I find an artist I like.

I have all. Family, friend, money(enough, not too much), health, work, kids. The only dream left is to go in space. I want to see the earth from far away.
Maybe in 20-30 years we'll be able to afford some kind of mini space trip. (At a good price)

(I also would like to see a proof, something concrete about life elsewhere, on another planet)

You kidding me? The game development career is prone to unexpected changes and very exposed to risk. You know how luck based that is. I'd suggest becoming something like an accountant if you want stability. (Although if it's working out for you I applaud you.)

So I had an exam on 9th and then I will become mechanical engineer, I have a good knowledge of C++, java, MySQL, little bit Android Studio but have no professional degree of any of the course, I sometimes thought to move to IT sector as computer programming is my passion, I love to do this. But as I don't have any professional degree I can't Talent is not everything. I am planning to move to another city for study purpose, give some exams and try to score very good in them so ill get a job to settle with. And when i'll get settle than after i'll try to get professional knowledge on computer programming, as @roytheshort said " Stability ".

I dream to improve my house in Denver. It needs a new parker heating and air system.Once I repaired the heat pump myself. And it was not successful at all. I have spent a lot of time and energy. And in the end I had to look for a specialist.

Make enough money in an industry (that doesn't drive me mad) to easily afford buying a nice small house on the bad side of town. Then make enough money to sell or rent the small house and buy a small house with a large yard in a nice neighborhood with the sale/rent. Then save money to buy a house with lots of land in the mountains. Then work on paying that off so I can use money from the sale of the second house to renovate it when I become that pensioner who checks your walmart receipts.

In the meantime, take life at my own pace and just enjoy mundane things like museums, restaurants, parks, Asian supermarkets, day trips, and making things.

I also was dreaming to visit Japan since 16 y.o. And my dream soon will come :D. I am going to Japan this July:) I have booked cheap tickets on https://uk.lowcost.club/ and started learning some general phrases in Japanese. I am very excited :) I want to try their famous noodles and watermelon patties.

My dream(honestly and I hope it doesn't get removed) is to try every drug at least once. I have never done a drug in my life though. And to make good games.

I kinda have three sides of me that dreams different things.

Mind:
Become the greatest game designer to have ever lived and impact the world.
Heart: Be with the love of my life, even if said person doesn't return those feelings.
Body: Just wants a damn burrito, damn it!

I've tried quite a few, and must conclude that the drugs your body produces by itsself are the best. Your body is a big drug producing machine. All your emotions are based on drugs. When you sleep your brain produces DMT (google it) the strongest hallucinogen known. You can get a nice buzz from doing sports too like "runners high" by jogging. Finding "love partner" is also very "lucrative". But some drugs can be beneficial too if you are well informed and use them, not abuse them. I do wish the laws would allow adults to be able to experiment more.

Apparently that part of my aspirations may happen really soon. I just found out empty land off the grid out in nowhereseville, Arizona is cheaper than my car. I look forward to having a free campground with a barn for big 4-wheeling toys...

Good to know we have a Doctor in the house. That will come in handy ;)
im not sayn it in sense of protection, life can be exstatic without any addons to your system, and that is the real exstasy, drugs only push you around and tickle your senses, and will cause damage if done continuosly, even if your carefull, just havin the habbit of using external material for a proper function is bad. and the most important part, you wont be able to reach a natural exstasy.
