Windows White screen when launching gamemaker

Hi there

I'd really like some help!!

I get an empty white window when I launch GM. I know for a while this was a known issue but none of the old threads are helping. I have followed all the advice I can find.

I have tried to resolve it in the following ways:

1) Leaving it to see if it eventually launches. I left it for an hour. No change
2) Reinstalling (incl redownloading the installer)
3) Turning off the internet prior to launching
4) Turning off all AV and Firewalls (if it makes any difference, I use BItDefender)
5) Using a different user's account on the same PC
6) Safe mode. I don't know much about safe mode. It wouldn't launch at all.

I am running v2.2.0.343 on Windows 10. I don't know of any change before/after this error occurring.

I'll put my most recent ui.log in the next post.

You didn't mention this specifically : Did you disable firewall and antivirus and then try reinstalling?

Also, has GMS 2 worked for you previously? When did this start happening if this is the case?

Have you also tried deleting your runtime files and if so, did GMS 2 successfully complete the download of the latest runtime?

EDIT: If GMS 2 has never gotten past the white screen, I guess the runtime question is irrelevant because it won't have had a chance to download the runtime files probably.

EDIT2: Your ui.log shows that GMS 2 detected an internet connection. When you disable your internet, how are you doing that? What normally works for me is disabling the network adapter. However, if your installation has not downloaded the runtimes yet, even if disabling the internet lets you get past the white screen, you will have to re-enable it to download the runtimes.

Thanks so much for your response.

Gamemaker was working three weeks ago, which was the last time I used it. I can't think of any specific changes in the interim that would've caused the problem. I have a laptop running the same AV and successfully installed GM on that this morning.

I just tried to disable firewall and AV and then try installing. No joy.

My PC is a desktop so to be sure I physically removed the ethernet cable and disabled the wifi. I'm really at a loss.

I know you updated to say that deleting the runtime is irrelevant but out of curiosity, how would that be done?

Thanks again for your help

Ben

That's great, but have you actually gone into Windows Network settings and disabled the network adapter?

If you just unplug the cable, I suspect that GMS 2 might just believe there is a problem with the internet connection, and will sit there waiting for the connection to be restored, whereas if you disable the adapter, GMS 2 skips the network detection. If you've already tried this you can ignore, but if you haven't, I recommend at least trying it.

Runtime files on Windows are located in the folders here : "C:\ProgramData\GameMakerStudio2\Cache\runtimes"

There is a config file in "C:\ProgramData\GameMakerStudio2\runtime.json", but I'm not sure you *need* to edit that, but I usually do if I manually delete or add a runtime.

You were right, I hadn't tried that. I did just now and unfortunately I get the same result, only with this in the log (last couple of lines only)

[10:40:10:632(d879)] File exception 'Could not find file 'C:\ProgramData\GameMakerStudio2\ide_feed.txt'.'
[10:40:10:634(d879)] CheckForUpdate : Skipping because internet is not available

Yesterday, I followed a guide to 'complete' uninstalls including removing the registry bits and bobs, and ensuring the Cache folder is removed (among others) and unfortunately that made no difference either.

I'm utterly stumped at this point. I even just opened up a number of other applications I've got to check there's not a broader problem but I have no issues anywhere else.

Do you know if it's possible to download the installer for a slightly older version? I'm wondering if that might make a difference.

Thanks again for your time

EDIT: Alternatively, are there some files or folders I could copy from my working install on my laptop that might get the desktop version going?

You should be able to download older installers from the release notes page.

I don't use Windows 10 unfortunately(Windows 7 and Mac OS) but I have seen other threads where certain updates of Windows 10 caused problems. Is your Windows 10 completely up to date?

I have been able to copy the runtime files between windows and Mac no problem, so thats one thing you could try.

I have seen the white screen before on some builds, but I've never had it last for more than a minute tops, and even if it did, killing and restarting GMS 2 would fix it.

Well I tried copying the files across, but no luck there. My Win10 is up to date (as it is on the laptop where GM works).

It's infuriating. Is there somewhere I should report this to yoyo ?
