Android compile time cache

I have a large game which takes around 12 minutes for the apk to compile. After this any subsequent compiles only take 2 minutes, since the assets were cached.

Ever since updating to the latest version of game maker which uses gradle as the build tool each compile always takes 12 minutes.

Has anyone else noticed this ? Is this because of the gradle build tools ?
