So what is this game all about? Or rather what is it going to be about?
Light above Darkness.. You're locked in a cell within a very deep dungeon. Now.. You simply have to get the hell out of there! Pick up a weapon and fight your way trough monsters, exploring and finding new weapons & armor to help you. Find some magic spells to further improve on combat! Find coins all around the dungeon by smashing pots or finding chests and even secret areas! Then spend those coins on smugglers hiding in the dungeon to buy useful upgrades and items!

Played the game, and my verdict is its great! You have a really nice foundation to start with, simple, but could be made to be very complex if you wanted.
I experienced no technical problems, no bugs etc.

The only thing I would suggest personally, is that coins come to you when you walk by them instead of having too hit E to pick them up.
Other then that, awesome start! Cant wait to see more!

Ohh, yeah, that's where the map ends, haven't gone that far yet! :p

I'll extend the actual map later once all the basic gameplay elements are in place.

There is only one map in the entire game, from bottom (Dungeon) to top (Overworld) but I will be putting in a lot more enemy types (From archers to mages and many more)

Now the menu however, what do you think could be improved? (I'm working on adding a "Load Game" button and more graphical settings)

The pixel grabbed my attention so I played it.....
  • ummm it seems without your freeze magic, its impossible to attack enemies without getting hit. (unless you attack from under a platform)
  • Die and got a crash. I got upset because I got quite (I believe) and I didn't think twice about saving the error

Thanks for testing it! :) If you feel like giving the crash another go, let me know what it says.
Yeah you have to hit the enemies from a distance, you need to attack a second before they reach your position (This is a efficient way of attacking the regular enemies)

The Menu is almost entirely black.You should try making buttons,maybe a black and white or dark background or bigger letters so most of the space is not empty.You know,make the menu interesting :) Maybe even add a speacial cursor or animations

-The upgraded bow (multi-shot) has one of the arrows slide slowly along the ground.
-Arrows stuck in a closed door will resume their flight when the door is opened.
-Can attack enemies when one tile lower than them, but they cant hit you. (may be intended)
-Floating point heath?

Auto pickup on coins is great! There seems to be a delay between them hitting the ground and getting collected.

The smuggler did say he would be bugged to hell and back :D
The amount of arrows you have are displayed at the bottom next to your mana (which is the green heart)
The dragon bow is getting some changes in 0.4 so that should fix itself soon
The arrows getting stuck on the door I did not think about! Thanks for letting me know about that!
Attacking enemies one tile above has been fixed in 0.4 so that should no longer be an issue.
The decimals in the health meter is strictly for testing out Armor and Damage taken, but that will be changed over to integers very soon.

Now the delay however, that is there to show you the amount of coins you get and also just there so that you can manage to see the coins before they get picked up. I can make a custom option in the game to shorten it though :)

Great update man. The tooltips on everything are awesome. (I think they should stop being displayed on open chests and the 'iron sword' at the beginning once you pick it up) I'm playing on a 1366x768 display so the mana/arrow/whatever else is there isn't visible.
I would still be keen on faster coin pick up, I tend to just leave them all behind at the moment :D
Keep up the good work!
Ps: I'm determined to figure out what 'commands' there are :cool:

Fixing the tooltips right away.

Coins (gives 500 coins)
show_fps=true/false (shows fps on screen)
 
Just played. Looks awesome and the gameplay is smooth! I like the sounds and music too. Looking forward to further development of this! I couldn't figure out how to switch weapons or armor though.

Weapons can be switched with 1-2 keys. Spells with F1 and F2 and F3, Armor will switch out if that set is better than what you currently have on. (I'll add some info for that)

Good being able to see the mana/arrow HUD now, noticed 2 other things, this chest towards the end of the level (with the funky tooltip)

Fps seems to sit around 44 for me, sometimes it spikes to around 60 after killing a mob (giving a momentary speed up). Not sure what normal is suppose to be. Everything else is solid, I do try hard to break it :p

Oh damn.. 44? Well that not's not supposed to happen. Could you tell me your specs? Just so I can get a good idea about that.

And the chest.. I simply forgot to put stuff in them :p So that's a simple memory problem :D

Another quick question would be.. What's the lighting set to? Smooth or Fitting?

If it's set to "Smooth" could you try and set it to "Fitting" just to see if the Framerate improves? Thanks :p

Either are about the same. Seems to jump between mid 40s to mid 50s. The change in game speed is noticeable now that I'm paying so much attention to it.

First impression looking at this game is very good. I can't play the demo as I have a Mac but looks great with this low pixel count retro style. Only just got GM2 so looking forward to starting my own project after seeing the great work on these forums. Well done.

Played around with it, everything seems pretty good! My only complaint is that it's a little subtle when you get hit and I didn't realise I was losing health until I was nearly dead. Other than that, nice work, keep it up!

The animation is great too! And bow was for sure my favorite weapon!

I think one thing that made me confused was the lack of equipment / inventory UI and also a map.
Also, there is no indicator of what magic you have equiped, i took a while to discovery how release then lol.

One thing that i missed was some kind torch for myself.

What is the final propose of your game?? Feels like Tallowmere! =)

I´ll keep following this thread!

Thanks for your feedback, sir! I'm glad the sound isn't annoying! I randomly generated the sounds until I found something neat! :)

Yeah I personally prefer the Bow as well, though the Arrows are going to be quite scarce, so that might be a small downside, but high damage!

I'm going to write down that I need to implement a HUD for Magic in the 0.9 Update! :) I'm gonna try my hardest to implement more weapons, but it is quite difficult with how I planned the final game.

My plan was a simple "Start from the bottom.. reach the top" kind of game. Defeat enemies, or don't. Pick up armor if you feel like exploring or any weapons, find upgrade hammers, max vitality/mana wells. Most importantly is that this is not supposed to be a difficult platformer, rather just a simple Jump/Attack platformer with some RPG elements. This game is going to be on the easier to win side.

Updated to 0.9. This one fixes some fullscreen issues and adds a new weapon!

Added:

Added New Weapon: Throwing Knife
Added HUD for current spell
Made Achievement progression persistent
Added a Readme.txt in the .zip file for some additional useful information!
Improved damage indication (Image alpha reduced from .5 to .3 and sound volume/priority increased)

Changes:

Removed Jumping Achievement (Test Achievement)
Removed Critical Health Sound

Fixed bug where you would be unable to attack after respawning if killed during attacking animation

The arrow counter now displays the ammo of currently equipped ranged weapon

0.11 is here and this is the final major update that introduces items!

Now what is important is finding bugs and balancing things, so if anyone would be willing to provide some feedback.. now is the time! :) I do want to finish this game at some point.

Added:

Added Shield (Further reduces incoming damage if used at the right time)
Ring of the Alchemist now also increases potion drinking speed by 50%

Changes:

Changed cranium & bones gravity from .4 to .2 for longer air time.
Ring of the Alchemist price increased from 210 to 230
Lowered poison debuff time from 12s to 6s
Buffed damage on all enemies

Fixes:

Fixed bones still rotating when on the ground
Fixed eyes overlapping dragon armor
