THEME:

Three Simple Rules

The GMC Jam is a WILD game development contest run every 3 months by the GameMaker Community. This is the 38th such jam.

Members compete to make the best game possible over the course of just 96 hours.

GMC Jam 38 will take place on the following dates:

August 27th, 2020 12:00 UTC - August 31st, 2020 12:00 UTC
(Countdown Clock)

  • Any GMC member can take part in the GMC Jam. You must use GameMaker to create your game.
  • Games must be made between 12:00 UTC on August 27th and 12:00 UTC on August 31st, and posted in the games topic.
  • You may use resources such as graphics, sounds and scripts that were made prior to the jam, as long as the bulk of your work takes place during Jam weekend.
  • You may create one post per entry in the games topic. You may create this post before your game is finished and continue editing that post to update your progress, in fact you are encouraged to write a devlog!
  • All entries must have a download link in the Games Topic before it closes at 12:00 UTC on August 31st.
  • All entries should work on Windows as a standalone executable / compressed zip folder. No installers please. Your entry can also work in HTML5 and on other platforms, but most voters will be using Windows and therefore your entry should work primarily on windows in order to secure a decent amount of feedback.
  • All entries are encouraged to follow the Jam theme. It isn't mandatory to do so, but you'll often get more favourable reviews from your peers!
  • You may participate alone or in a team of up to 3 members. See the "teams" section below if you're looking for teammates.
That's all you need to know, but more information will be available in the Games Topic when it opens!

  • As soon as the Jam ends on August 31st at 12:00 UTC, a zip folder of the games will be created and posted in the voting topic so that players can download all the entries at once if they wish.
  • Voters will then have around 2 weeks to play and rank the games and voting will close on September 17th at 9:00 UTC.
  • Any member of the GMC can vote, even if they didn't enter the jam. You cannot vote for your own entry. Votes shall be posted in the voting topic.
  • Voters are encouraged to rank as many games as possible, and their final votes must include at least their top 3 games. More information on this will be provided in the voting topic when it opens.
Boring technical info about how the votes are counted: Entries receive points based on where each voter ranked them, following the formula 1/(rank+1). So if a voter puts a game 1st, it gets 0.5 points. If a voter puts a game 6th, it gets ~0.143 points. These are all added up by the Jam Host to find the overall rank for each game.

That's all you need to know, but more information will be available in the Voting Topic when it opens!

Main Prizes
  • The winner(s) get to decide the Theme of the next GMC Jam.
  • The top 3 entrants, as well as winners of the "Best Of" categories will win personalised banners for their forum signature and a place in the Hall of Fame topic.
  • More to be confirmed...

Community Prizes

Members can offer their own prizes for the GMC Jam. PM me, @GameDevDan , and I'll add your prize to the list. NOTES: You should offer something based on your skills, rather than a commercial prize. You will also need to handle giving out the prizes yourselves after the end of the jam.
  • @GameDevDan - Whoever comes 1st place gets a free copy of Gyro Boss DX.
  • @Bart - I'd like to offer to create a tune, to be used for whatever purpose, as a community prize to the lucky entrant who manages to end up in 7th place (either deliberately or accidentally).
  • @Rui Rosário - I want to offer a prize for both the 8th and the 17th place in the GMC Jam (not arbitrary, although it might look like it). For the prize itself, I offer my programming skills for one of:
    • A simple DLL (written in C, source code and build instructions supplied, will only be tested on Windows platforms);
    • A simple GML extension/module (area of domain can vary, but there are some areas of GameMaker I don't really use so there are some potential restrictions);
    • Refactoring an existing GML code module (small to medium scale);
    • A Java based project (not Android module related, as I don't have it);
    • Other (I have other programming skills, so if none of the above seem enticing then we can align on what exactly would be offered);
    • Prize is redeemable until the discussion topic for the next jam gets created.
  • @Cloaked Games - I will offer a copy of my game, The Last Librarian to the entry that wins BEST USE OF THEME.
  • @ZombieLawyer - I'd like to offer a copy of my game, Aye Aye Captain, made in GMS2, for whomever places 4th in the jam (or the next highest that's not receiving a prize if there's already a prize for 4th). It'll be a CD-Key for Steam.
  • @EvanSki - I want to offer a free copy of the official release version of my Debug console for the games that place first to third, and the games that place third to last - last place
  • @FeetUpGaming - Last place - Detailed game feedback + 3 hours of GML Training from a developer of 12 years. Second from last Place - Detailed game feedback + 2 hours of GML Training. If there are multiple people in last place then that prize will go to the second from last place.
  • ...no more prizes, why not submit one?

You may enter the GMC Jam as part of a team (up to 3 members). Sometimes collaborating as part of a team can help you to e-meet new and interesting people. Here we will list people looking for teammates. If you want to be added to the list, send me @GameDevDan , a private message with the skills you are offering.
  • @Bart - As last time, I'd once again like to make one tune for someone looking for music for their jam game. People who are interested can have a look on my SoundCloud page.
  • EXAMPLE: ( Member ) is a ( Skill ) looking for a ( Other Skill )...

The more people that enter the jam, the more fun we'll all have! Spread the word far and wide. Use the hashtag #GMCJam on Twitter (and other social media networks), join the Discord Chat, and talk about your games on the GameMaker Reddit. You are, of course, encouraged to talk about the Jam as much as possible here on the GameMaker Community. Create a devlog on the Work In Progress forum if you dare, and definitely post your thoughts, comments and memes in this very discussion topic!

You can also change your signature to tell other GMC members about the jam:

Viva, El Presidente! Nothing I like more than lounging in my hammock in front of my bungalow on the sandy beach, sipping on a cold, fruity drink, and dev jammin' on my lappy while listening to the steel drums of a fine, calypso tune. But alas, I will have to make do in my cramped basement yet again. I am ready, Jam 38 -- ready to over-scope and feature creep my way to mediocrity and incompleteness once more. Bring it on! :)

Indeed, happy to team up with someone for some music! Going to do a little project of my own, too.
Feature creep? Check! Overscope? Definitely check!

Looking forward to this jam already! :)

I promise I will once again commit to attempt to participate in this jam while being fully aware that the likelihood of such a commitment to hold true is about the same as winning the jackpot and becoming rich with it, with the disclaimer that it has never happened to me, any of my acquaintances or even any acquaintances of my acquaintances, therefore effectively stating that I am most likely going to act like I'll be a part of the jam, potentially even create a project for the jam when the time comes, but ultimately abandoning the jam and never speaking of my previous commitment ever again.

More theme guesses...
IRRESPONSIBILITY

NONSENSIFICATION
PROCRASTINATIONS
RESPONSIBILITIES
SYNCHRONIZATIONS

TRANSFORMATIONAL

UNPREDICTABILITY

I'm hoping some spaces will be revealed later. 16 letter words are mostly bad themes, imo.

Counterclockwise is a cool theme, I wouldn't mind that one bit. Might join, it's the weekend before the semester starts anew so could be a bit busy 🙃

Interesting first clue but it doesn't reveal much yet.

A couple of pretty random guesses for now:
NOBODY EVER WINS
AI IS VICTORIOUS
GAME INSIDE GAME
GOD MODE ENABLED
A LOVELY JOURNEY
CODE IN LOCKDOWN

uhhh since you've all made the same assumption I'll drop this second clue real quick

CLUE NUMBER 2

NONE OF THE DASHES ARE SPACES
Ummmm so there's a space at both ends? Or the 'two spaces' clue is related to the theme itself and not the written form of the theme?

My guess is that either it is related to the theme itself or it can be spread out arbitrarily between any of the dashes

Like saying toque’s games are great. But they suck. Haha Very interesting clue I will take a multivitamin and think about that one.

Hmm clue 1 is two spaces and clue 2 is that none of the dashes are spaces.

I think clue 2 is to let us know that it is indeed a 16 letter word.

So my new guess:

MULTIDIMENSIONAL

I wouldn't be that uncreative. Right?

Right?
I mean, you could make a game about a company manager fighting a game that takes up too much of their worker's time, trying to destroy every single floppy disk to stop it from spreading..

It's not about BOSS FIGHTING GAME theme itself being uncreative, it's about JacobV choosing this theme for one of previous Jams already.
(more specifically, the #8/#29 one)

I've noticed this particular theme guess seems to pop up almost every discussion topic. Haha.
