To amke music you'll need a digital audio workstation (DAW) like Reaper (great and affordable) or Ableton (costs a bit but has a huge community). Then you'll need nirtual isntruments (VSTi). If you want to use simple sounds like chiptunes you can get away with free synthesizers and samplers. If you want more complex sounds you'll want to buy some nice synths and samplers but that gets really expensive pretty quickly. I spent about 70 bucks on the Reaper DAW but more than 1'000 on VSTi from Ample Guitar, Output and Native Instruments. Also a small midi controller is very handy too.
To learn how to create music you'll need tutorials on:
- your DAW (lots of those on you tube for any DAW)
- your VSTi (sometimes harder to find)
- Music Theory (lots on you tube and udemy)
- Music Production & Music Arrangement (some on youtube and udemy)
So creating music is quite expensive and learning takes up alot of time.
As for sound: I don't create my own sound effects. That gets even more expensive really quickly and is really difficult (at least for me). You'll need good recording equipment and a sound proof room. You definately don't want the slightest noise and you don't want an echo on your recording. So sound effects I just buy. i.e. here:
